Mirena - Madness or Myth? Class Action started??? TMI for some...
Well, I am a little bit of a pickle and not sure what to think about Mirena now after a few websites...
I had my mirena inserted in September, and so far been going good. Bleeding alot more than what they told me, but have been reassured it will settle down. Then a fortnight ago I started getting severe pains in my right lower abdomen shooting down into my right leg - 6-7 times a day. Enough to make me stop and GASP...
Anyways, there was a few other things that didn't seem right, so I rang the clinic. I was told it was normal and that I should see how I go, if it still happens over a week to call them. Now the pain is still there, but only 3-4 times a day, but still as painful. I have been 'spot' bleeding every 3-4 days, not even for a full day, bright blood.
When I rang the clinic today and explained, and that I thought I was about 15 days overdue for a period, she told me abruptly that I wouldn't get them anymore and not to worry. When I asked why I was in pain, she told me that it was normal... ???
She reluctantly booked me an appointment next Tuesday.
So I started googling and someone on here gave me a website to go see - CureZone. And then I started looking at other sites too... And it started to scare me... I know that the majority of people are ok on Mirena, but a 20% rate of bad side effects? And over 50% taking it out in the first 3 years?
Here are some of the other severe side effects (ones with tick are the ones I get too)
CHRONIC fatigue v
CONSTANT bleeding (up to 9 months)
Heavy bleeding and clotting v
SEVERE Lower abdominal pain (cramps) v
SEVERE joint and pelvic pain
SEVERE Acne or other skin problems v
DEBILITATING Back pain
SEVERE bloating v
SEVERE weight gain v
SEVERE Headache v
SEVERE Mood changes and wood swings v
Constant Nausea
Loss of hair v
Vaginal Dryness v
SEVERE depression and feeling of hopelessness v
Decreased Libido
Increased body hair v
Dry skin v
Incontinence and constipation v
Many many more
I have identified that since it went in, I have started going BONKERS. I actually had to start taking Antidepressants because of my moods - I am sooooo sad, and moody, and really really snappy at EVERYONE. I have severe acne now - I never have pimples, not even when I was a teenager...
And so many other symptoms.
So sufferers are organising a Class Action in America, and now the UK too against the company. I want to find out what is wrong with me, the pain in my body, but I am freaking out now too that it is really stuffing up my body - anyone the same??????
I am also really scared they will talk me out of removing it at the clinic...
Opinions PLEASE!
I forgot to say that since it was inserted, I have put on 8 kilos. Also I am so bloated my mum asked me the other day if I was expecting!! And yes, I do exercise, every morning I walk 2 kms and eat healthy because I am a coeliac - so no junk for me!
Oh poor you. Sounds like you are having a really awful time at the moment.
Gee that is worrying about the class action.
I dont mean to scare you but my sil had a mirena and started having bad abdominal pains and she went to the dr and they did a scan and the mirena had broken through the uterus wall and was floating about inside of her. They were worried it was going to perforate (sp?) her bowel. She had to have a general anasthetic to have it removed.
If I was you I would be insisting they investigate further rather than saying it is "normal" because pain like you are obviously experiencing couldnt possibly be "normal".
im sorry the Mirena doesn't seem to be working well for you. I dont have advice, however I do thank you for postig this as i have been considering the Mirena, now I wont bother.
Thanks ladies for the quick replies (so far!) Widdly, I was recommended the Mirena by soooo many people who raved about it - and when I had my last bub, the doc was in there raving about it for over an hour. It really did seem like a flawless idea, but then now over 20% are suffering these effects... I am just a bit scared that it something bigger than 'a few pimples', because there is a shocking rate of people getting cervical cysts forming...
I am in no way an expert on this... I am just getting research and comfort.
Hi Misswingbat, Gee I hope you get everything sorted out, sounds like you have had a hell of a time. Iam going to pass this info onto my Mother, she had a Marina inserted as she had thickening of the Uterus(passed baby rearing now)but has had lots of bleeding, bloating just feeling off, down & always complaining she feels sick. She has also developed a red rash all over her face & thought it was her face cream, but she has used the same cream for years. We thought it might have been a food allergy, but now i think it`s the Marina. Also my Mum lost the first one,it too was floating around and had to be re-fitted with a new one.My Aunty said that in some very small cases, they might also be linked to Cervical Cancer . I don`t understand why Doctor`s don`t tell us all the Info we are intitled to know. Hope you are feeling better soon and everythings worka out for you hun.
TBH, I'm wary of any contraceptive implants. Yes, it might be more convenient - as in you don't hafta remember to take it every day - but the side effects from having that many hormones sitting in your body are ridiculous! I mean, Implanon comes with a warning that says it may affect your periods for up to 12 months after removal!!
I seriously don't think they're healthy - and the longer they're on the market, the more bad stories are coming out.....
hope that you find the answers to your symptoms... xoxo
I have one and it works great for me.. i had some bleeding to begin with but all fine these days.
Just remember that it is your body and the clinic can not talk yoo out of getting it removed if that is what you really want... just remember to use some other form of birth control!
Yes i came accross that site as well and have changed my mind about getting one inserted.
When you think about it - you're not supposed to put foreign objects in your body, if your body does not try to reject it, it will certainly disrupt the balance within you.
It does seem to work for some, but since i'm already a bit unbalanced i decided not to risk getting one.
