    D&C- refresh my memory please

I'm waiting for a scan on Friday to confirm a miscarriage and, barring a miracle, will be having a D&C next Monday. ( the first day of my annual leave- nice)

Its been nearly 3 years since my last D&C, so I can't remember what happens after, and as we are booked to go to Perth on the Thursday for a 10 day holiday, I just want to know what to expect-
-how long will I be bleeding for?
    -I don't think I can swim can I?
-will I be in pain for a while?
-how long after a D&C do you have to wait to have sex?

We're staying with a friend for part of it so i will have to warn her that my emotional state will be terrible, she's a doctor at least, but I feel bad that it won't be the holiday we initally thought it would.

    thanks for any experiences x

saffy don't give up hope just yet!
I had a D&C with my 13 week loss and I bled for a week, i don't know about swimming because I think they like you to wear a pad to prevent infection, I personally had mild pain, not enough to even take panadol, but everyone is different. I think it was about 2 weeks as we started trying again straight away.

fingers crossed you don't even need one.

Saffy, I am so sorry to read this. I really hope your scan on friday is positive.

When I had my D&C I bled for 2 weeks and had cramping/contraction pain for the first 3 days after.
Not sure bout swimming cause of infection and as for DTD I think I was told to wait till the bleeding stopped.

I am so sorry this is happening to you

I was told no baths for 2 weeks as the cervix will still be dilated and you can get infections. I had light bleeding for about 10 days.

PS I so hope that you won't need one anyway!

    Aww hun, I'm so sorry

I didn't actually bleed at all after my d&c. I was told to take it easy for a couple of weeks and that we could DTD when I felt comfortable, but to give it a few days.

I was in discomfort for a couple of days afterwards, but nothing worse than period pain.

Praying with everything I've got that you get some good news

I was told no sexy times for 2 weeks, and to wear a pad. I didn't bleed much either.

I probably wouldn't swim (although I did go on a 50km fundraising bike ride)

    Just ask...

I hope it all goes well for you.

I had one this time last year, and was told no sex or swimming for a week. I had zero pain after the first night, and didn't bleed much at all, only for a couple of days. I was only 6 weeks gone though, and most of the stuff was already gone.

    Hugs to you hun

Massive hun, i hope you get a wonderful suprise on Friday..... I'm so so sorry this is happening! When i saw that you were pregnant again i was just praying for an easy pregnancy for you!!

Um, my last D&C was august last year. I was 12 weeks along and i had tiny amounts of spotting up until that morning when i had to take a drug that i can't remember the name of!!! Anyway, that made me bleed massive gushes of blood 15 mins after taking it.
I bleed after the D&C for 10-11 days. I'm not sure about the swimming thing. I was in pain for 4-5 days afterwards and i was told not to have sex for 2 weeks. I really hope you won't have to have one sweetheart!!!

    Lots of love xxxxxxxxxx

i'm having a d&c tomorrow - i'll try and come back in with what "instructions" i'm given
mine is not for a loss - i have been bleeding excessively for several days (300ml+ each day) and was scheduled to have one late next month due to finding pre-cancerous cells in endometrium, so it's been brought forward to tomorrow arvo

Saffy, I really hope you won't need this advice because your baby defies the dr's predictions.

But I wanted to respond anyway. I didn't have any significant pain after the day of my d & c's (i've had three). Didn't need to take any further pain relief after the day of the operation. I think the advice was: no sex or baths (and presumably swimming) for 2 weeks. In relation to the bleeding: I believe most people don't bleed too much or for too long. (My bleeding went on a long time but that isn't typical and related to issues with the pregnancy, not the d & c).

    hugs x

Another good luck today from me

If you need the info. I was told I could bleed for 5-10 days, with it tapering off quickly. Not to use tampons, only pads, and to rest up for 24 hours. I was given panadol Before the procedure and have needed nothing since although my throat is sire today.

Keep in mind there us not just physical discomfort. The emotional aspect/grief can impact your recovery and your reactions to things. Everyone is different.

Hoping this is all just theory in your case
