19mth old knows nothing about TT

    HI All,

DD is 19mths old. Although she knows when I do a poo and wee she doesnt know when she needs to go.

She has no sign of when she wants to wee and poo. How do I get her to recognise the signs?

At 19mth you would expect them to tell you at least when they are about to do a poo at least wouldnt you?

    Thanks in advance!!!

She is still very young and children develop awareness about their bodily functions at different rates. My advice is not to push her or force the issue but to let her do it in her own time.

DD1 had no idea at all at 19 months. When she was 2.5yrs she decided that she was ready and she wanted to wear undies. She went from nappies to undies in one day and had only a handful of accidents in the process. The same with night time. At 3 she decided to wear undies to bed and she has been great - again only a few accidents here and there.

Totally agree not to push. She isn't even 2 hun. They know when they are ready. They are smart little creatures. My DS was still poo-ing in his nappies when he was going to 3yo kinder. My DD however has been toilet trained since she was about 15 months. She still wears nappies during sleep JIC, but think she'll be out of night nappies soon too.

My point is all kids are different. Don't rush her, you'll end up scaring her probably. A day will come when she'll not want to wear nappies and then you will know the time has come.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. At 19 months my DD had no idea either. Just now at 26 months she is getting it. Sure some kids train earlier, but i think your daughter is well within the norm.

I totally agree with Nai- Don'f force the issue, she'll let you know when she is ready. My DD has started asking to take her nappy off to sit on the potty or wee on the grass. She also tells me when she needs her nappy changed now. Pretty sure there are a few articles and interesting threads in the TT section with signs your child is ready etc.

She will be in nappies for a while then. I just hope she is not scared of the toilet because when I try to put her on there she screams! =(

    Thanks!!!

I would avoid putting her on the toilet if it scares her. You don't want to turn it into a massive issue iykwim? You could try again in a couple of months, but again, don't push it if she's not keen. She'll get there!
We have a soft seat that has pictures on it. We call it the special toilet seat and DD, who was scared of the toilet, loves sitting on it. Might be worth a shot down the track.

Don't put her on then hun.

Do you have a potty? Keep it out where she can see it,may be in her bedroom?? Also, what i used to do is, give her some toilet paper whilst i'm on the loo (and she is there too) and get her to wipe her bum and front bit (over her clothes). it was so cute to watch. She'd bend over, with her head almost touching her knees and wipe her bottom.

My DS1 is 25 months old and has only just wanted to start sitting on the toilet before a bath/shower. Not doing a wee everytime but we are making it a habit. He is no where near ready for full on TT as he is still not telling me when he has done a poo....only tells me every now and then.

Every kid is different, dont be to hard on yourself about it, they will let you know when they are ready.

Hey, TBH 19 months is still young!
Yes some kids do it early and some don't!
My DD was not TT til 2yo and 3 months, and she did it all within a week. In saying that a friend of mine has her DD trained before 2...

    LOL thanks ladies

Yep Raven thats the thing, i always hear people's kids being TT before they are 2 hence why i am thinking Why doesnt my DD even know she is doing a wee which is what got me worrying.

I think when i have bub #2 I will be more relaxed. Who would have thought doing a wee could cause so much stress in a mother!

Thanks all, you guys are great!

hey hun, my DD1 is 3yrs and 3 months and has only just started TT the past few weeks, she was like ur DD, knew when she'd done business but couldnt tell when she needed to go. she's still in pull ups overnight because she hasnt worked out that she needs to get up and go over night, we try her in knickers every few nights, but she not quite there yet.
i had my mum tellling me when she was two that if i didnt start TT then i'l have a hard time TT her later on, so i worried and tried pushing it when she was two but she just wasnt ready.
Dont stress about it, she will get there, just not yet
