2 and half year old, no interest in TT. Anything I can/should do?
My DS (2 and a half) can tell me all about what you're supposed to do regarding going to the toilet - he has great comminication skills. However, he has never done anything on the toilet and has very little interest it seems. We had a go of undies today, just to see what would happen. I kept taking him to the toilet regularly, no luck. He soaked his undies several times and didn't mind at all - didn't even want me to change him as he was too busy playing! My gut instinct tells me he's not ready but I'm wondering, given his age, is this is normal? Could I be doing more?
We've just started with DS, not because I initiated it but because he refuses to wear nappies and insists on being in 'big boy jocks'. I'm sort of just figuring it out as I go. I ask him very often if he needs to do a wee or a poo and try to sit him on the toilet at least hourly. Also, if he does a wee in his pants I don't make a big deal of it, I take off his jocks and show him that it is wet and we go into the laundry and wash them together.
If he does a poop he gets really excited, we go and scrap it off into the toilet and I let him flush.
TBH at this stage it is just about his awareness, I'm not expecting any miracles but I don't really have a choice because he gets hysterical if I dare try to put a nappy on. I've have convinced him however to wear pull-ups when we are out and at night. He now tells me if he needs to do a poo or a wee but we rarely get to the toilet in time, he usually tells me as the wee is running down his leg. I have also got special stickers and he gets one each time he tells me he needs to go.
I agree with AJP, my 3 yr old DS still isn't TT, his sisters were by now but he isn't interested. He can go sometimes but then others he just wees on the floor hence he is still in nappies.
All kids are ready at different ages, and TBH I think trying before they are ready makes things worse. My DS1 was showing all the signs of being ready by 18 months but wasn't actually ready for full time undies until just before his 3rd birthday. DS2 on the other hand trained himself just after his 2nd birthday. He pointed to a pair of DS1's undies with a picture of Lightning McQueen on the front and said "want to wear Queen". I told him to do a wee in the toilet first and he did, so I put him in the undies. He has been in undies day and night ever since! When they are ready, they are ready, and it makes life much easier if you wait until then. How do you know if they are ready - well try undies and see what happens. If it's just not clicking, wait and try again later.
Yep, my DS wasn't remotely interested till he was 2yr 11mths old and then he was completely day and night trained within 3 weeks. He would fight you tooth and nail if you tried so I left it till he was more than ready for it. I think there tends to be a lot of pressure to have them TT at a young age but there is no point if they aren't ready for it. Even though they may have some *signs* of being ready, when it actually comes to crunch time they still have a ways to go before they are 100% ready. On the other hand though my girls were day trained by their 2nd birthday and DS2 is 2 today and he isn't anywhere near ready to even contemplate TT yet.
