I used cloth at home and 'sposies if i was out and about (about 5 sposies a week i'd think). I had a long lean baby and huggies were totally useless. My friend uses them with success but she has a HUGE (adorable) chubba bubba - her 6 month old and 2.5 year old can wear the same size nappy!
Huggies also don't print the size on the nappy here (UK). Don't know if that's different to AUS but it was annoying when she was moving up a size, having no way of knowing if i was packing a 2 or a 3 in my bag to go out, and yes, a few times i took the "old" size and ended up with a very soggy baby/wrap/t-shirt on the way home!
I moved to 'sposies full-time at around 5 months (i loved them! But XP had sold my next size up and i couldn't afford to replace them) and Aldi have been the best i've found so far. I never get leaks etc.
Sasa with cloth you CAN contain that explosion It depends what sort of nappy you're using, but i had bambino mio's and i used to roll the inner in from both edges instead of folding it in two (so it looked like 2 cloth sausages with a gully down the middle), slap that on the bum, put a normal wrap over the top and then a fleecy longer-legged wrap (like fleece cycling shorts! LOL) over the top of THAT. It gives you about 20-30mins before there's any risk seepage you have to contend with, once or twice it was only the next morning that i found she'd "burst"
Hoobley, lol at the 2 sausages. It was a good description though as I get what you mean. No way could I get DP in on such a complicated sounding nappying system. Note that I have written "complicated sounding" as I'm sure that you get the hang of it pretty quickly and it becomes second nature. I have chosen pockets as the cloth to try out but once #2 arrives I might give your method a go. Am not too excited about the idea of newborn black poos in my beautiful new pockets. But they won't be all that new by then anyway.
Sasa, I found that flats with a good cover contained MUCH better than any sposies! Once you get the knack of it, it saves you doing a heap of washing LOL!
DoubleDee, we use mostly cloth, but when we do use sposies we use Aldi now. I actually think they're better than Huggies! But I agree with Trish, tempting as it is, don't buy too many of one sort just yet, wait and see what you like best on your bub. And if you want to talk, touch and see cloth nappies, just sing out, there's a number of us who meet up in the Outer Eastern Suburbs (Kaz being one of us), and we'd be happy to help
Oh, and if you can't help yourself and you want to buy nappies in bulk before your bubba is born (I bought lots of nappies on special while pregnant), then I would suggest attaching the receipt to the boxes with a bit of sticky tape so you can always return any unopened boxes/packs in case they don't work for you. I would do that with clothing, too. Don't pre-wash it all. Only pre-wash a few of the small ones for the first few days. If you end up with a big bub they might not even fit in some of the smaller clothes, so you could return them. My DD for example was too big for the 0000 Bonds Wondersuits.
But! Are you interested in gardening? There's a garden show at Ferny Creek this weekend, I was thinking of going on Sunday, and would be more than happy to show you a pile of nappies and a brat to model them.

I have used the premium tabless seconds from Naelfran and found them excellent, never a leak, good fit - though slightly smaller than the Huggies equivelent. Be prepared to spend an hour or so sticking the tabs on in front of the tv when kids are in bed - most of the nappies were only missing one tab, and a few were perfects (a nice surprise when you come across them). At present they are out of stock in the medium & large sizes in premium seconds - I rang them today.
