Do they wee when they are asleep?

I was having this conversation with a dear friend and she has me totally confused.
I was asking whether her little one woke in the morning with a wet nappy and she said when they are in deep sleep they dont wee. I thought you could wee at anytime! When DD was born the midwifes got me to check her nappy crystals to check she wasnt dehydriated....new borns sleep alot. I tried to google it and got all adult sites. DD is 2 and is soaking through again ...so is she not sleeping well (Duh) or just a bigger bladder.

i think it has something to do with a hormone that slows down urine production when alseep

Hmm I have been thinking about this all day, I cant wait till she logs on and sees this because she thought I was a wako thinking they wee in there sleep. Apparently when they stir they wee and then go back to sleep.
Yeah RayRay we are having the same problem its like a ball of mushed up crystals.
Another question she says boy wee smells different....I only have girl wee's except DH and I dont want to smell his !!
Why does it smell...I thought it smelt because of dehydration
I am obsessed with wee at the moment sorry

My kids all wee'd in their sleep. I think what it is is when they have slept for a long ammount of time, they have had no fluid intake so therefore is little output. Sure makes sense to me.

And Danni, how on Earth do you get a 3 month old to sleep 12 hours girl. I'm pushing 9 at the month with a 2 year old !!

I think they do wee - as Trish said, if it is a long sleep then they aren't having the same fluid intake therefore they wouldn't be having as much output. I have noticed that after DD has her big sleep of 10 hours her nappy isn't as wet as it is after the next sleep which is 4 hours maximum.

    Hey BecG,
This is a good question. I think that they do wee when they are asleep.
I know that Jett has wet nappies when he wakes from a sleep night of day.
I think the smell is caused from teething, Oh know Jett smelt when he was teething? Could your friends little boy getting teeth?

OK - So I am the dear friend and I have only just seen this This came about from me telling my dear friend to try putting her darling daughters nappy on just before bed, or trying to get her to do a wee just before she sleeps cause it might be 2-3 toddler wees soaking that whole nappy so thats why she is wetting through??

Elimination Communication followers will say that babies dont' wee in their sleep, they stir, wee and go back to sleep. Hamish feeds 3-4 times a night and his nappies can be dry in the morning so I personally dont believe its dehydration.

And I think boy nappies smell lots more, even from a newborn stage they smelt more, and its a different sort of smell. But maybe you have to have both sorts of baby in a cloth nappy to get a good feel for the wees.

    So thats my 10c

    Yes you are very sad!!!
I have been goggling about this so you want go on about it anymore.
Foul smelling urine can be caused by many things and a urinary tract infection is the most important of these. In little children, urinary tract infections may be a sign of severe abnormalities of the kidneys and/or bladder. Thus children with infections need to have a careful evaluation. If an infection has been ruled out, then other things like dehydration or poor hygiene can be the cause of the odor.
Normally, a baby's urine is clear and yellow-tinged. Dark yellow or even pinkish color urine may mean the baby is not getting enough fluid.
Babies wet their nappie with urine several times a day. The number of wet nappies is a helpful sign of how much fluid the baby is taking in. Although it is sometimes hard to tell when a disposable nappie is wet, generally, a baby should have at least seven wet nappies each day. Fewer wet nappies can mean the baby may not be taking in enough fluid.

This site did not specify gender in regards to foul smelling odor.
I hope that this stops you from smelling wet nappies.

have you considered the smell difference could have something to do with the different diets that your kids might have?

Even from newborn, if you were bf then what you ate would have influenced smell, and diff formulas etc might affect smell also??

I don't reckon River wees in his sleep - but he wakes during the night now, has a little sing (and wee) and goes back to sleep. If I get him as soon as he wakes up, his nappy's practically dry (and I mean really dry, since we use cloth, I can tell), but since he wakes up very quietly, and sometimes won't make noise for a few hours, he'll be sopping by the time I realise he's awake.

As for wee-ing in sleep, I'm not sure it's deep sleep, isn't there REM sleep or something where we dream? All the times I remember wetting the bed as a kid, I was dreaming, like dreaming I was going to the loo.

As for the smell, well I only have a boy, but in my, erm, delicate condition at the moment, everything stinks to me. I think he stinks all the time!
