Help me use cloth

I always planned and still want to have bub in cloth nappies , but atm i am using disposables as they are easier atm and i dont know where and how to start with cloth, we have some std fold em style nappies but find them a task at nappy time

any suggestions, we also cant afford really exp ones

If you are not against secondhand ones, check out some secondhand nappy sites to see if you can get a bargain. Not all nappies work for all babies, and there is nothing worse than spending $40 on a brand new nappy to have it fit horribly on your child! I've cried once or twice for that reason.. hahah!!!

First work out what kind of nappies you would be most leaning towards using, all-in-ones, all-in-2's, pockets, fitteds - people have different preferences. Then work out if you want OSFM (one size fits most so goes from baby to toddler) or sized nappies. Sized nappies are usually a better fit than OSFM and not as bulky.

just thought i'd add, the best cheaper nappy that works well for us are baby beehinds. they are sized so it would eventually cost u a bit more but short term they're cheaper. DD2 has been in her mediums since about 4 months and she's still got plenty of growing room in them at 7 months.

or alternatively u could use prefolds with some funky covers.

I have bought a mix of second hand & new. The SH ones are still awesome, so I can strongly suggest that to relieve some the financial burden. For DH, I bought a lot of All In Ones. They are the most like disposables (with the least fuss), but as I'm a bit more savvy on such things, I also have fitted nappies that require covers, and some extra boosting. We'll see how well I do when I finally have the baby!

As for the outlay - when you think about how many nappy changes you are doing a day, it won't take long for the cloth nappies to pay themselves off, compared to what you're just throwing in the bin every day.

i watched them and they went for about $40 for 7, you probably want more than 7 but they were nice colours and seemed cheap to me. i think i will be buying some soon...

Ahh unless they are reputable brands being sold on ebay - stay well away. You get what you pay for - cheap doesn't necessarily mean any good

yeah your right about that Arimeh, a while ago i went to buy some nappies from ebay u got like 12 for 60 bucks or something and i thought they looked great but i decided to read all the feedback for this buyer and everyone was complaining how thin they were, and always would leak etc.

and price wise i did notice that the ones that last for a few kgs do cost more first hand but obviously if had the cash they might be better.

What should i expect to pay for some decent ones? i dont mind second hand..i like the idea of all in ones so u dont need to use a cover but i also would not mind using a cover depends what would work out the best value i guess

All in 2's don't need a cover either, but typically dry quicker than AIO's because you take the insert out to dry.

My favs for the two girls are GF's (genesa forge), DM's (Dragonfly Magik), BBH (baby beehinds - but I use the fitteds), Mandy Macs (fitteds) um also have a few randoms chucked into my stash too - but it is mostly GFs and DM's now because they fit best. Try to work out if your bub has a narrow crotch as well, because that might count you out of some brand of nappies that are too wide. DM's are one of the thinnest you can get, and DD1 still gets camel toe in them.. LOL

Secondhand you pay anywhere from $20 - $28 for really good condition ones.
