Hi all,
I have wanted to use cloth for ages, but just haven't had the money to do it with, so...How much money would it cost for me to have my two bubs in cloth for the initial outlay? I would like to get one size nappies to fit both to hopefully cut costs a bit. DS is already 6.4kg's and DD is about 10-11kg's, so I think they will both fit into one size nappies ok. I would need enough for both of them, so maybe about 30 nappies??? Is that enough? Probably only day nappies as night nappies are too exxy at the mo.
Any thought from you nappy experts out there???
hmmmm depends on the brands you get. Um I think a few hundred. Maybe with this christmas bonus the government is handing out you can invest in a stash of nappies. The money you will save in the long run would be well worth it. Plus MCN have good resale value so you will make a bit back at the end of it all.
Maybe you could try the itti bitti's in Med & Lge sizes. My DD fits the mediums still & Im sure you would find your DS would fit the med too. possibly...
I don't have many (any?..) Oe size fits all nappies so not too sure what to recommend..
Im just about to enter the world of two in cloth. But I have mostly FItteds & sized AIO's. Im lucky though as I can make them myself too.
I would check out Baby Beehinds fitteds. I think 24 would be probably the max you would need, if you washed every 2nd day and dried them in the dryer. Both DS and DD wear those as they are OSFA - but you will need covers for them, and the covers are sized.
Best part is - you can wear them at night too - so that stops the costly night nappies
Other than that - you could go Itti Bittis like FJ said - DS is 12.5kg but has a really slim waist and hips (all the weight must be in his big head) and he fits into medium Ittis - DD is probably around 5.5kg now and she fits into the mediums too.
FJ, that's the plan, for me to spend some of the bonus money on nappies. I have wanted to use cloth since Lily was tiny, but just haven't had the money to start. I started when I went back to work before I found out I was pg again and I have 3 nappies...definately not enough to do anything with, LOL. I don't even use them cause it's not worth it with only 3 they just sit in the drawer.
Mel, I can get my mum to knit me some covers. I have already got some patterns that I like which I gave her when I was oging to buy nappies before getting pg again! She is a beautiful knitter and has made gorgeous clothes for the kids already. I keep telling her to knit and I'll sell it on the net, but she won't! I will buy some covers too for if we are travelling or out and whatever to prevent any pressure leaks, but I am more than happy to use home made knitted covers.

Another question, hemp, or bamboo? Which is better. I know they both have similar qualities- extra absorbant, antibacterial...blah blah. But in your experience which was better?
I use Itti Bittis by day and Baby Beehind Bamboos by night.
I find the Itti Bitti D'lish Snap In Ones great as you can re-use the outer cover if bubs has only done a wee and wash the snap in's only and wash the full nappy if they have done a poo. That way I have saved money by buying more snap in sets instead of full nappies. I also have some bamboo mini boosters for car trips, etc.
ETA: DD is 6.3 kgs at last weigh in and is in a Medium and has been for a while, there is however ALOT of room to grow as there she is on the tightest clips (without overlapping, which is also an option therefore they can go smaller if required)
Baby Beehinds Bamboo, I use these with a wool cover and I cannot fault them, they are fantastic, never had a leak and DD sleeps at least 12 hours a night, if not 14 hours and still no leaks, thats with no extra boosting, I do not use these by day only because they are bulkier, the Itti Bitti's are slimmer fit and funkier for day use!
Best of luck with your search, it is hard to figure out where to start but you will soon have the hang of it.
It might be worth your while deciding on a couple of different types/brands you want to use and getting a couple of each to try before making your decision, because you want to be sure that the nappies you buy are going to work for your babies- It would be really disapointing if you bought 24 of 1 type of nappy and then found that you didnt actualley like them on/ they didnt work for you.
I have 2 in cloth, and even though Ididnt outlay all at once I would say my stash of about 30 nappies is worth at least $700-$800. That being said my fav nappies are green kids which are not cheap but do a great job.
Definitely bamboo - takes longer to dry, but is softer and is more absorbent
Another tip - keep your eye on Ebay for nappies too - cos quite often there are nappies like baby beehinds that people have prewashed but not worn - and they can often go quite cheap!! Also Mandy Macs are a good option - they are bringing out the bamboo ones - I have two in the old hemp style and I think they are fab. They are one size fits all - so would fit both your kids... and they do up with a snappi so are completely adjustable for a great fit.
I have 2 in cloth. I experimented and then found what I liked. Is there a nappy retailer near you? or you could google OSFA AIOs. My girls share their nappies, and when DD1 is out of nappies I will still have 2 in nappies with this new one on the way. Snaps are easier in the OSFA as the rise is easier to adjust on the nappy.
I like the ittis and the BumGenious OSFM nappy. My 3 1/2 mth old is almost 6kg and we've tried his medium ittis on and they are still too big. I would think that if you have two in nappies you would spend just as much whether you bought OSFM or sized nappies, but the down side is that you wouldn't be able to swap them between your littlies.
I have only one Bub atm, but we bought three OSFM nappies and a 12 pack of ittis (5 smalls, 5 mediums and 3 large - the 12 pack has 13 nappies in it) and these are enough for us. So at the moment, my 3 1/2 mth old uses 8 nappies total. We have spent about $400 on all 16 of our nappies.
Gabi - I'm surprised the medium IB doesn't fit - DD is only 5.4kg and the medium IB's fit her fine - the snaps do up across her hips so that there is only 2 snaps showing - if that makes sense?
How much for two in cloth??
