please help me - at the end of my tether

    Hi everyone,

Does anyone have some ideas I could try for my little boy, who is almost 3.5? He goes to daycare 3 days per week and is pretty reliable with using the toilet there, but at home it's a completely different story. We have been trying to toilet train in the warmer weather on and off all summer. (and made a few attempts in 2009 and 2010.) To say I feel like a failure is a massive understatement. But, he has only been going to the toilet at childcare for a couple of weeks, so I suspect he's only barely ready.

Anyway, at home we have tried rewards, issuing reminders every half hour, sitting him on the toilet at certain times a day, letting him see us on the toilet, lots of praise, and getting him to help clean up when he does have an accident but I just don't know what else I can do to get through to him. How long should it take for him to get the idea?

At home he wears terry towelling underpants or regular underpants and at childcare he just wears underpants and trousers.

Also, he is due to start at preschool next week and I'm a bit worried that he will stop using the toilet when he changes. Would you delay starting him at preschool?

    Thank you
