I'm having an issue deciding what to do with my 2yo son. He is SO ready to toilet train, hating his nappy on, but I don't know if I should do the pull-up thing (which are really expensive by the way) or the training pants that places like best and less sell? Which are the better ones to go with?? He likes the potty, which is good, and we tried the running around without anything on (good thing we have floorboards and not carpets!) thing, but it's not being successful. Of course, the whole thing's not helped by the fact he's not talking very well (speech issues). So what do I do? Where do I go from here?
I didn't use either, but I would go with training pants over pull ups.
You might find that he's actually not ready yet. DS1 was showing what I thought were all the signs of being ready at that age, and was always pulling his nappy off. He didn't do so well in undies though, and was nearly 3 before he was able to wear them. His biggest problem has always been concentration - if he's interested in what he's doing he just won't stop! With DS2 I did it differently - I didn't put him in undies until he asked to wear them. He was trained from the first time he wore them so I think waiting worked (mind you, younger siblings are nearly always easier!).
2. Good food for thought. Maybe I will wait. It's so hard though. Lots of comparisons go on... will let him go at his own pace. Never know, might be easy as when his time is right!
I use cloth nappies, so I am biased, but I would go the training pants - soooo much cheaper!! They are easy to use too and generally help them TT faster than nappies/pullups (there really is very little difference - if he hates wearing nappies he will have wearing pull-ups) Plus they feel and look like real undies so that will boost his confidence
You can get some good training pants from cloth nappy places too - Swaddlebees do them and Noonee Wilga do customs too.

We're not going to use either here I think. I tried seeing how Natty would go in a pair of undies a few weeks ago and over the course of the weekend she didn't do a single wee in the toilet. I guess she's just not ready. I sit her on the toilet before her bath each night and also if we are at home I sit her there each time we change her nappy. Sometimes she asks to go to the toilet too, but she still hasn't done anything in there. *Sigh* The waiting is hard. But I have heard it is so much easier if you just wait until they decide.
I also understand the pressure too - most of the other kids in DD's playgroup are toilet trained already, some of them younger than DD. But I'm trying to let Natty lead me in this one.

We had trial pullups given to us and DD1 treated them like a nappy, training pants would be better. We found in the end just normal undies or nothing.
Like mentioned maybe he isn't quite ready? We tried when DD1 was 2 and 3 mths and found she wasn't quite ready, retried 3 mths later and she was trained in a few days.
We've just started with DS, it was like WW3 trying to get a nappy on him and he always wanted to go to the toilet.
I've found that just plain old jocks have been much more successful. I've tried pull-ups and training pants but IMO they take away too much of the wet feel. DS is having much more success with jocks and he is so proud of them.
if your talking about the terry ones kmart sell them , they wont contain that wee that well, you can also get some from online nappy places!!
we mainly used just undies and delt with the mess, i used aldi pull ups when out
my little boy is starting to hold himself which is great!! and gets distressed when he does a wet nappy. i went and bought a book from k-mart (lucky find) about boys going to toilets, and it has a flushing toilet sound on it. very cool. he loves it. we got our training pants from best'n'less - one near me - and they cost 2.99. A bit expensive, but compared to pull-ups, so worth it!!! Will start again next week. life in a bit of an upheaval at the moment.
