Soaking through nappies at night - HELP!

Hi all

My 18month DD is soaking through her nappies at night and when I come in she has soaking wet singlet and PJs. I normally use Huggies nappies but since this has started happening I have tried BBH bamboo fitted nappy with boosters and wool cover. No luck

She goes to bed around 7pm and gets up at 9am. It doesn't happen all the time but it will happen for a few days every few weeks.

Any ideas? I thought maybe try the huggies with a few bamboo boosters?

A few things come to mind first up...
Wool covers need to be lanolised to be water proof. They also need to fit correctly so no gaps holes or loose area where they can allow leakage.
The bbh appies need to be washed about 10 times to allow the bamboo to reach max absorbancy. So depending o. How old you nappies are they may not yet be attheir full absorbancy. If the nappies are well used or are second hand they may need to be strip washed. This will remove any detergent and dirt build up in the fabric fibres and increase their absorbancy. You can do this by washing on HOT and using a few drops of dishwashing liquid and a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil.
How do you wash the nappies normally? Using too muh or the wrong dtergent can affect their performance.
Again the nappies need to fit correctly so no gaps around the legs or tummy etc....

Failing all that it may be time to move up a size in nappy or try a different brand fit or most likely a dedicated night nappy like the BBH night nappy or Sandman. Personally if she is that heavy a wetter you need to get a dedicated night nappy as the are generally twice as absorbant as a regular fitted nappy like you are using now.

I think the nappy is mostly leaking from the top as she is a belly sleeper. The nappies have been washed maybe about 5 times so that could be an issue as well.

I think I might just get some night nappies - thanks for the idea!

Hi there, I have a similar issue with my 21 month old son, who, incidentally is also a tummy sleeper. We use Huggies also and we are actually at the maximum size now and he still has a wet nappy at least every 2nd or 3rd morning. What is a BBH or Sandman Nappy. Ive never heard of these. Where can you purchase them from?

They are modern cloth nappies (MCN). If you do a google search for Baby Beehinds you will find the website (sorry I don't think we are allowed to post links). BBH have a dedicated night nappy which I am told works really well but you also need to buy a wool cover to go with it (which they are out of stock of atm). I just bought a Dream Nights nappy because I read they were great. I had issues finding sandman in stock. I will let you know how we go with this one! DD is in the largest Huggies size as well so they are a bit big.

Check out EBay for Sandmans Mel....they are posted on EBay by the same woman who makes them at Sustainable Hemp Products, but she puts up a few on EBay every month. They are the same price, but free post and usually large sized.

Hunt round for wool soakers - you don't have to use the BBH covers with the BBH night nappies, you can mix and match. So check out the WAHM Naps site, Oze Baby and Parrot Pants for woolen bottoms

Also, don't forget about Buy For Baby (au site) which is a second hand nappy auction site - fab value.

Huggies suck!
I had huge problems with them a few months back with my DS. He was in the biggest size which was alot bigger than he actually weighed but it made no difference.

I tried Sorbies (available at Coles) and these worked but I didnt like the way they are sold. eg. 7 nighttime and 13 daytime nappies in the one pack. And althought the nighttime were good I thought the daytime were pretty flimsy.

So we are in Aldi nappies. He is a very heavy wetter and these hold him for a good 12 hours no problems.
I havent tried the MCNs but for the best overnight disposable I think its Aldi hands down.

I will have to give them a go! Huggies are to expensive for them not to work at night

My Dream Nights nappy arrived yesterday! So soft I will give it a go tonight and let you know. DD soaked through again last night and had wet PJs and for the first time was covered in little gel crystals. Poor poppet. She actually tired unzipping her PJs which didn't help her stay warm this morning

Make sure you prewash your nappy a couple of times before using it, or you may find it won't work
It needs to be washed and dried then washed and dried again.

How did you go with the night nappy?

I've just woken up to a wet bed again this morning. And because we co-sleep it's MY bed that's wet . DS is only 3.5 mths old and he's wetting through Crawler size Huggies every night. I change him before I go to bed, usually about 11 pm but by 6 am he's wet through. Sooooooo frustrating as there's no way he'll just drop back to sleep like he used to because he's cold and wet.

Think I'm going to head to the cloth nappy area and ask for recommendations.

We went awesome. The Dream Nights nappy works a treat. It has never leaked so far, even her singlet hasn't become wet from being to close to the inside of the nappy. I normally wash the nappy during the day and put the liners in the dryer and the cover next to the warm aircon to dry for that nights use. I have just placed an order for one for extra night nappy and an extra liner set so I don't have to use the dryer. We also tried Aldi nappies which seemed to work great at night however did not hold the poo during the day and we have quiet a mess!

I have either used Babylove nappies or the Aldi brand and the only time they have leaked is just before DD was diagnosed with type1 diabetes and was weeing everywhere and I mean excessively. I don't know much about the cloth nappies but can recommend either of the above two for disposables.
