Couldnt find anything about this so thought i would ask!
Our nappies are really stinky? Especially our BBH and bumG! I wash them and hang them out and they smell fine but once DS does a wee they stink really bad?
Am i doing something wrong with the washing process? I will do a hot wash occasionally and have put a splash of eucalyptus in to try to deoderise them but they really stink? I am not sure how to strip wash so havent really done it? I will wash twice a week, so they are in the nappy bucket till they are washed.
Any suggestions would be great! Sorry if this has been discussed before am tired and sick of smelly nappies
i read that if bub has a lot of amnonia in their wee it makes them stinky (ie esp if on their bums for a longer period). and best thing to do it rinse before dry pailing. And not to leave them longer than 2 days wet.
I have been thinking about this too and at the moment i wash every 2 days
We have the same prob. We wash once a day and put a couple of drops of lavender in.
I was actually wondering whether it was a boy thing? As in when he is going through a growth spurt he may have more testosterone in his urine causing the smell.
Would love to hear from MCN users with girls?
Wash twice a week at sixty degrees with Napisan and a normal washing tablet.
Dry either outside or inside as weather permits.
A strip wash is to strip excess washing powder in the nappies and is just a basic wash without adding and detergent.
Also, your son may have stinky wees due to an infection or slight dehydration - or they're really wet so need changing more often. May not be the case but worth bearing in mind.
Ammonia is a natural waste product found in urine. It STINKS - our dry-pailed nappies the day of washing can bring tears to your eyes. I change DS every 3-4 hours, so I'd think 1-2 hours is enough, but we have bigger inserts than the typical bumgenius has (bumgenius is for going to nursery in or if he poos an hour before bathtime!).
A bladder infection would show as pain when urinating SOMETIMES, not typical sicky behaviour. But it would smell, and smell different to ammonia, which is pungent and sharp.
id strip all your fitted and boosters, not anything with pul, on 60 degrees with i think its a 1/2 a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, do extra rinses til no suds left, should help with the smell!!
Cloth nappies just do smell unfortunately. But, it's a good way of knowing when your little one needs a nappy change. As long as they smell fresh once you've washed and dried them, then I wouldn't be too concerned. You can buy little "bath bomb" type balls to go in the bucket to make it smell better and when it breaks down beyond reconition, then you just tip it in the wash. I can't remember the name of them. But, most online nappy stores sell them. Someone mentioned they use napisan. If you're using BBH and Bum Genius, then don't use napisan, you'll break down the PUL and ruin your nappy in no time!
