Cloth nappies just do smell unfortunately. But, it's a good way of knowing when your little one needs a nappy change. As long as they smell fresh once you've washed and dried them, then I wouldn't be too concerned. You can buy little "bath bomb" type balls to go in the bucket to make it smell better and when it breaks down beyond reconition, then you just tip it in the wash. I can't remember the name of them. But, most online nappy stores sell them. Someone mentioned they use napisan. If you're using BBH and Bum Genius, then don't use napisan, you'll break down the PUL and ruin your nappy in no time!

2 hours of use should be fine. What boosters are you currently using? And I agree with Celsie, don't use Napisan.

You should really have no use for Napisan. Line drying in the sun will get rid of any stains and the fresh air and sunlight would kill any remaining bacteria the wash didn't.

That's fine, saves me money (and I have done it occasionally), but I have to ask...

Poo nappies? Just a normal wash? Yes, has happened on occasion but I thought it would be yicky. Also, line drying only happens about a third of the time. I do try to get it in the sun when possible, but I live in the land of rain so is it still OK to not line-dry and not use something strong in the wash?

Do you not have a Little Squirt to squirt off the poo? I do this, then run the nappy under some water in the laundry tub and rub it together, which removes any remaining discolouration and then it's "clean" and goes into the bucket with the rest of the wet nappies. I actually hardly ever line dry mine. I've never had a stain on my nappies other than purple panadol stains and I put them on an inside line in the laundry to dry, especially in winter. In summer, I'll throw them outside, as it's dries much faster.

Talking about Napisan!- I've always thought it was a big no no too. But I read something interesting the other day on a nappy site. The owner recommended using Napisan (or a similar BICARB based product) to do the a strip wash. Which meant soaking them overnight in it. Then doing a rinse with Canesten Laundry rinse or Dettol Fresh. And do this every 1 or 2 weeks..Interesting technique I thought (This lady makes PUL pockets).

Oooh, I use Napisan (generic name for nappy soak - sometimes it is, usually it isn't but it was all I could buy last time) just a tiny amount in the drawer you put the washing powder in whenever I wash nappies and I must confess I haven't noticed a problem yet - is it just if you soak in Napisan or if you wash in it?

Is it the bbh magicalls you're using, or fitted? I know my fitted sometimes have a smell to them, but I've never had my magicalls smell. I boost my magicalls if Emily is going to have a sleep, that way I'll get around 4 hours out of them. I usually boost my fitted with both short & long boosters.

I'm not sure on the napisan question. I would have thought washing in them would do just as much damage as soaking them in it??

Soaking, I did notice the covers were funny after just a month when DS was newborn so stopped soaking. It's the difference of overnight in it compared to a 60-90 minute wash with it in only part of it. I've not noticed any cover crack or leak since not soaking.

I hate stinky nappies ! We find that it is only when DD is teething that it becomes a big problem but does happen at other times as well. If all of her nappies are smelly I do a strip wash (hot with double rinse and a little bit of washing liquid) Our normal washing routine is to do a rinse, then a wash with half a cap of purity and extra rinse and either line dry or dryer dry.

oh we also soak in cold water which is good for getting the smell out of the fitteds in our nappy buckets at all times

Hemp is our biggest culprit and fitteds are worse then pockets etc. not sure why

Ryn, I think they suggest not to use Napisan at all.........

Two hourly changes should be fine I would try a strip wash, or even just a couple of washes on 60. Apparently you shouldn't use dishwashing liquid if you ahve a front loader? Also, maybe try washing every two days. That's what we normally do, but if I leave them longer than that for any reason, they REALLY stink LOL.
