Is there anything I can do to help me learn when he needs to go?
No unfortunately. It's a developmental thing. He will eventually learn how to tell when he needs to go and be able to hold it until he gets to a toilet. But if he can't do that yet then there's not really anything you can do but wait. One day he will just get it and you won't even need to teach him
