My DD was the same with poos. She was toilet trained from about 20mths, but refused to poo on the loo. She always knew when she needed to go and would aske for a nappy. She didn't do a poo on the loo until she was about 2 and a bit. We tried regularly to get her to do it, reading to her on the toilet, timing it to when she usually went, singing on the toilet ect....but nothing helped until one day DH bribed her with a chocolate and it worked. I have no idea why then, but it worked and since then she did poos on the loo.
With the day caer thing, he probably just isn't that comfortable to do his business there. If he's ok to sit on the toilet and can hold it (though not ideal or terribly healthy for him) I would say to just persevere with it, keep taking him to the toilet there and one day he will probably just do it.

Same problem here. DD1 especially would just hold it for days and ended up with severe constipation. We did a treat based thing after everything else had failed - they got a butterfly sticker for each poo they did, and once they had three butterfly stickers we went to the toy shop and they could choose any toy they wanted. Thankfully they never wanted much!! It took a couple of weeks but after they managed the first poo in the toilet there were then no problems.
