My ds was the same and very switched on at 2 yrs. We went straight to using the toilet, didnt worry about a potty. Bought the seat that has the two little step ladder attached to it.
I would ask him if he wanted to sit on the toilet like mum and dad or his cousin ( who he adores) put a sticker chart on the back of the door and whenever there was a wee no matter how Big or small he put a sticker on the chart! He actually did a poo before he did wee and that was rewarded with a chocolate frog
It was January and warm so we spent the whole week at home and when outside just in jocks so he could freely pee on the lemon tree!
No pressure but lots of encouragement and rewards. After the week he was trained, we had a few accidents but that's to be expected!
