What is Wicking?

Hi girls

I am kinda new to all this MCN business, am loving it but get confused sometimes!
I have just purchased some Happy Heinys and was reading a bit more about it and came across this...

Should the fleece roll out? Yes it should roll out. Do NOT try to roll the fleece in. This will cause wicking if you try this

How is the fleece rolling out and where does it roll out of?

I can't work out what they could possibly be talking about - but I am sure that someone will!

Wicking is where the fabric lets the moisture move through it. Think of an old oil burner with a wick in it - the oil travels up through the wick and gets burnt.

Still not sure what this has to do with the fleece rolling?

Wait - I just looked at their website. I think that they are talking about the bit that goes around the legs. I assume from what they are saying that the nappy curls slightly around the leg. What you want is for it to curl outwards so that the inside layer is showing rather than inwards where the outside layer would be touching them.

This would be because there will be a waterproof layer between (guessing - didn't read exactly the composition) the two so that moisture doesn't get to the outside. But if any of the outside layer is in direct contact with the skin it will potentially get wet and then it sucks up moisture. Imagine a tissue that one corner is in a puddle of water - pretty soon the whole tissue is wet.

Wicking is a term used to describe how moisture spreads through fabric. Imagine leaving the tip of a washcloth in a small puddle of water. After a short time the whole washcloth will be wet. This is wicking, and is usually used to describe how a nappy can leak if a wet nappy comes into contact with an absorbent fabric on the outside

thanks girls! Even after reading there website I still couldnt work out what they meant! So thanks for putting it in simple terms for me!
