I still have that bamboo fleece from the co-op way back and I have done nothing with it, I haven't even taken the scissors to it. I may have washed it as I think that is what was recommended. I was going to start by buying on of the nappy making kits and see how I go. It isn't too hard is it?

i cant believe yourve got bamboo fleece form way back then. God ive gone through loads of it since...lol...Ive just gotten another 10m of it sitting here that I have to cut into and wash tonight.
Jed went out and bought me nioce new cupboards for in my sewing corner...only trouble is now I have to try and get all my material in there.....maz thinks jed should have bought another 2 cupboards :ROFL:

Hahaha, the bamboo fleece had been collecting dust alongside the sewing machine and yet it still continues to collect dust, won't be for much longer though. I have 1 bag sewn and 4 more nearly finished with 2 more to start which might get done tomorrow arvo so I can get them listed asap, I am determined not to spend my savings, I like watching my bank account grow even in minute amounts :lol:
Now a nappy question, I bought Noah some MD's and one was a Micro Doodle, everytime I put it on him he gets the worst rash, is it the microfleece? What should I use to make my nappies with instead as the layer next to his skin? What is it that BG and GK uses?

i think Monkey doodles use MICRO FLEECE as their staydry inner layer.
Greenkids and bum genius use SUEDECLOTH as their staydry inner layer.
my child started reacting to both microfleece and suedecloth, so i switched to natural fibre inners e.g bamboo velour, cotton velour, flannelette, sherpa, bamboo, hemp.
and the MCN i kept that has the inners she reacts to, i just use them sparingly, with a cotton velour double layer homesewn liner, lying inside them.
I moved Isla out of my room in to the spare room yesterday AKA my sewing room. All my stuff is still in the corner it was so I am hoping if I can keep it organised I can keep it in there & just bring out the sewing machine/overlocker if I want to sew at night.
She slept in there all night with out a peep. The room is pink so it was just waiting for her. DH wasn't so keen but I think he just has trouble of letting them grow up & realising its time to take that next step. After all I can't really have TWO children in my room espeically when one is a newborn & will be up every few hours. I think Isla would wake each time. Plus when she has her little midnight screaming fits, she will wake the baby.
But most of all, if Isla is in the "spare" room the IL's will have no where to stay when they visit.... what a shame.
So all of my not in use materials are all packed & shoved under beds. the stuff I am most likely to want to use is in my bedroom cupboard & then all my other need access to all the time atm is still piled on top of the sewing table.
Will sort that out today & try & get most of it done so I can pack it away too.
Thanks Gigi, I thought GK and BG were the same for the stay dry. Noah is all good with that thank goodness, it would be a blow if it wasn't, the nappies are so expensive. So which of those materials you mentioned keep bubs bum dry, oh and is soft.
Fiona, does your DH like co-sleeping? Can you get him to have a chat with my DP? Juz hates co-sleeping. I just feel so much safer and happier with everyone together. That and there is nothing like having your little ones arms around your neck and being nose to nose all night listening to their snores. Good luck with the move!
Well my sewing machine decided it didn't want to work anymore, I have 2 finished bags 4 with the bottoms open and 2 ready to get started so this nappy venture looks a little way off unless I can figure out what the problem is.
For starters, it is Homemaker brand :wall: The tension knob does not work :wall: the thread keeps coming off the loop bit that goes up and down which means constant rethreading about every 10 mins, all of that was fine and I was coping with it but now the bobbin thread gets loopy and bunchy on the bottom and it is like it is not being caught by the needle every time. In the whole 2 years I have had the machine I have never properly cleaned or oiled it so I will do that today. I changed the needle so that isn't the problem. Thankfully for Freecycle I have a sewing machine coming my way in the near future and then I might be able to send this one off for repairs to keep it as my backup. I am actually thinking of getting the Brother Innovis 900 in a few months time.
Anyway, time to shower and go on the great big orange pumpkin hunt before I tackle my sewing machine :lol:
Ah ok, a few pointers
1, your needle should be changed after every 8 to 10 HOURS of sewing.
2, The needle you use will have a great effect on your sewing. You need to use the appropriate needle for the material you are working with.
3, homemaker brand is a generic brand of sewing machine. You will find the exact machine with a differen "brand" slapped on it in Aldi, ebay etc. Its a cheap machine that simply wont handle the layers of MCN (trust me ;))
4, Don't waste your maney repairing it. If you want a back up just buy another one LOL,probably cost the same as repairs.
5, don't just defluff & oil your machine. Depending on its use it should be serviced (professionally) every 12 months, but more frequent with the amount of use the average MCN sewer would use.
6, Don't Blow in yur machine to remove fluff, you will be blowing moisture into it & there for risk of rust
Umm what else... If your tension isn't right, look at your needle. It can often be that not your tension.
On Co-sleeping, if he doesn't like it there is always the couch. LOL
When I was on ML with Austy I made nappies to sell (my own pocket nappy pattern) but just sold through word of mouth - I knew I'd be back at work as an engineer sooner or later so it didn't work for me to set up a business. The problem was I undersold myself and found people ordering in batches of 20 at a time. Good for the bank account, but I felt like Austy was missing out as I had so many plans to make things for him but found myself tied to making heaps of nappies. Probably why I am having trouble getting myself to make pocket nappies now as I am just over it. A freind did ask to go halvies with me in the very baby license and set up a business together selling my mei tai slings (I made one for Austin off my own pattern that she thought was great and very sellable) as well as very baby nappies (VBSN's were very much in demand then and Erica's was teh only place you could buy them if you hyena'd them) and breastpads, her wrap around slings and the odd clothing set OOAK for bbabies and toddlers. Was a great idea, but since I pull the big bucks out of DH and I, tehre was no convincing him to let me stay home and be a WAHM. She went on to set up her own business but just sells wrap around slings. I'm also one of those people who is much happier making one of everything - I get bored when I have to make heaps of the same thing. Although for some reason I am loving making the very baby naps! I have just run out of hemp, sherpa and bamboo though so I have to stop for a little bit till more arrives...
Oooooohhhh! I got 3 gorgeous minkee cuts (and yummy chocolates!) in the mail today AND a parcel of bamboo fleece! So tempted now to get onto the AIO's, but I am pretty tired tonight, and have to make another curtain tonight as the rest of the curtain fabric is due on Friday and I don't want to have to make them all at once...
I can at least throw the bamboo in the washing machine though.
LMS, Fiona has some great pointers there, and she is right about a cheap machine getting through those thick layers. A cheaper model (like a base model) of a reputable brand should set you back no more that $200 and you'd be much better off than with a cheap brand. In addition, a walking foot really helps with feeding those layers through. Also, if your bobbin is catching, perhaps it is in the bobin case the wrong way around? Check to make sure it's winding the right way as per the diagram in the instruction book - it's amazing how bad things can go if it goes around the wrong way.
Thanks girls, I might get my innovis 900 sooner now, I managed to loosen the bit that needs to be loosened to wind up bobbins, I fixed the upper tension knob, I can now adjust it again. I got a new makeup brush and it is now my sewing machine cleaner and gave it an oil. Everything seems to be normal except that if I go fast the stitches on the bottom are loose so I think that is the top thread. They are less loose if I go slow. I bought new needles and popped one in to be sure it is new and that didn't help either. :wall: I am just too tired to deal wth it now and have other things on my plate all the sudden although sewing would be a welcome distraction.
Do you think the innovis 900 would be good to do MCN's? As I said MCN's are not my priority but it would be nice if I could make them when I want and not have to worry about a machine giving up the ghost.
As for nappy patterns, I have an idea in my head, I just need to put it on paper and do a mock up of it. I imagine it would be difficult to not copy aspects of nappy patterns as there are only so many things you can do. Now just to learn how to draft a pattern but that is another story altogether. I just grab things and sew and learn from my mistakes that way, trial and error :lol:

someone showed me a basic nappy pattern they bought in spotlight!! i didn't realise spotters HAD nappy patterns. it was KWIK*SEW 2062 - too wide for what we need, but great place to start if you've never seen a nappy pattern before.
FJ - when i overlock the cotton velour liners, there is SO MUCH fluff inside the machine, i have been huffing and puffing to get it out! whoops, didn't know that was wrong. thanks for your tips.

- i really like velveteen on my mama pads, but haven't seen that for sale anywhere
nice and soft.
the three listed are NATURAL fibres, absorbent type - NOT stay dry.
i use them cos my bub reacts to synthetic inners.
another very nice SYNTHETIC inner fabric is micro chamois - nappies covered have some in stock right now.
Hope the moving room thing works for Isla Fee, but it must be sad to "let go" of your sewing room.

Thats right Maz you are not supposed to use one of those brand name pattersn commercially...they can and do sue people who do that.
You could however as GIGI suggests use it as astarting point and modify it to your own specifications and then it would be okay...I think the point of law used to be x number of point of difference and it becomes a new pattern altogether.

Machine fixed :dance::dance::dance: My not so DP has an industrial sewer person at work and he fixed my tension knob for me. So bag sewing all arvo for me!!!
I went down to the sewing centre and fell in love with the Janome QC 6260 with plans to layby it at the $699 price tomorrow. I am starting to have second thoughts though. I might be better off getting the Janome 5027 which is a good quality basic machine for $399 and $5 goes to Breast Cancer research :dance: and maybe spend about the same amount on an overlocker since I want to make clothes too and it is a bit stronger. Or I could get the whiz bang model since I might try quilting and save up for an overlocker later :lol: Decisions, decisions!!!
Gigi, thanks for the insight on the lining materials, it is all Spanish to me. I might try the suede cloth since I know Noah does not have a reaction to it (yet). I like the sounds of organic materials though..
Fiona, How did Isla go with the move? Is she a heavy sleeper? Can you still sew while she sleeps? Noah sleeps through everything thankfully.
Mel, Any idea on what the X is? I have it in my head but now I am scared if it looks like something someone else has done and I get sued even if I have never seen the nappy or pattern :s Have fun picking colours!
Isla is doing ok so far in her room. No I think I would wake her if I sewed in the room with her. But I can take the machine out & sit at the dinner table if I really want to do sometihg at night.
don't worry Maz, i'm not making nappies to sell, in fact, atm, i'm not even making anything even for us! apart from nappy liners which don't really count! (again, not to sell).

i just thought i'd share that pattern with the group, so that newbies might see it, spotlight is accessible to most. it was a shock to me too, that spotlight sold it! after the spotlight staff being so clueless about nappy making fabric each time i've asked (i no longer bother!!).
this thread inspires me, and i WILL get my sewing machine one day - hopefully in time to make trainers for bilbs! (and lots of other things i would love to make for her). Most of the sewing i've done this last year, i've gotten so excited ("wow, i CAN make stuff"), i've made things for other people and kept very little of it for bilbs! I made all these pinnies last Xmas, and bilbs only got to have the ONLY one i made a non-rectifiable mistake on!! LOL. (we're talking "snip" - no return and don't bother collecting $200, straight to jail when you cut where you shouldn't have!!).
Off to layby my machine today, I decided on the QC 6260, I thought I would get the more upmarket one for when I want to learn to make quilts, I have heaps of scraps begging to be made into something after making a heap of these bags. I hate to throw away fabric that could be useful.
I do see the importance of a walking foot though, my machine was struggling to get through 8 layers of cotton while sewing the gussets of my bag, I never knew there were such cool little feet for sewing machines, my mum never had anything fancy for hers, in fact I think she does everything on a 40 year old Janome that used to be my grandmothers.
I'm going to list my bags on my new Etsy store today, I was going to put some money towards the 2 nappy sewing kit but I can see that is useless for now, thanks ladies. I will put the money on the Janome first so I have a machine that can handle the workload without conking out on me.
Good idea about getting a decent machine Sarah..WTG...I'd love to make quilts...I have no brains for that stuff :ROFL:
Gigi - when yo made the velour liners, did you make them one sided or 2? IM thinking of making them 2 sided and just overlocking them together
ETA - ok have just back tracked and seen that you use 2 layers..DOH maz! also ive got a pattern for training pants that I'll copy for you and send you babe. I havent had the chanch to make them yet but hey there's always tonight lol.

I have a Pfaff hobby sew. Its great for MCN as the foot has extra lift in it. so you lift the foot as normal but then I can raise it even further to put more layers under it. That was its main selling point for me.
Pfaff seems to be a very high quality make. I was shown a Select 4.0 for $799 but to me it didn't offer much with only 40 stitches. I would assume they are heavier built and longer lasting though.
Just got back from putting $50 towards the 6260 so that is what 1/14th of the way? :lol:
Quilting, to me. Sew scraps together, get some fluffy stuff, and a plain sheet of fabric, sew together and top with funky stitching.:lol: I better not say that in the quilting forum, I am sure it is way more technical than that. I am lucky my mum is a very talented seamstress and quilter, maybe over Skype she can teach me a few things.
Now that bamboo fleece from the co-op, I am confused by it. It is in a tube shape and one side is fluffy, the other not. would I sew the 2 not fluffy sides together and have myself an insert? Or would I need more layers than that. I may as well put some use to it now rather than keep it in a box.
Why you would need more the 40 stitches is beyond me LOL MCN need 3 basic stitches, Straight, zig zag & tripple zig zag. Plus it helps to have an overlocker LOL.
BF, I personally prefer to put fluffy sides together have the knitt on the outer. Pre wash it befor eyou sew it as it shrinks. But if you did a say 30 by 30 square (for example, bigger might be better) then you would have a trifold. 2 layers make your square folded into 3 gives you 6 layers.
Dont do the fluffies on the outside Sarah - Ive done this and after a while the fluffiesness looks horrible plus the fluff ends up everywere.
Fiona is right...knit side out and wash it first. I usually wash it 3 times in hot water.

i looked at some Pfaff hobbyones too, for the high lift of the foot (if that is the right words). i think it a walking foot was already in that mahcine - is that right? But it was an extra $25 for a foot i liked (so you could make really skinny seam, some sort of guide so you can sew really close to edge of fabric).
WIth that tube of bamboo Sunshine, i select one point and cut across, so you get a flat piece of bamboo. SOme people sew it fluffy side out, some sew smooth side out. i don't mind either. But i found it DOES matter when you sew with hemp. with hemp, i only sew the fabric FLUFFY side out, otherwise after much washing, you get balls of stuff TRAPPED inside the stitching and it makes the item a bit bumpy.
Sometimes, things said online, might be typed out with a kind voice and kind eyes, but that doesn't transpose always into the words read by another person. It's so hard online, to always convey what you mean, in the way you mean it. Especially with tired mummies who don't always have time to check their entries, like I would if i wasn't so tired all the time! So, i hope you are not "put off" sunshine, this is a really nice group, and it's so much easier to get point across IN REAL LIFE, when you can see the person's eyes, facial expressions etc. i have come a cropper with this MANY TIMES, when i have offended when offending was the LAST thing i would have intended. SOmetimes, all it takes is a comma missing, to totally change what a sentence means. something as tiny as that.
also, typing out all the niceities we say in real life, is time consuming and i know i can come across as a bit brusque, when i get to the point (yes, that does actually happen sometimes) without all the niceties that i would normally say before that bit.
Sometimes the voice of experience has learnt expensive, painful lessons, and they want to save others from having to "learn the hard way". I know FJ and MAZ and i can safely say they said what they said, in a helping way. They have large families and are super busy, hearts of gold and so helpful to lots of people and MCN advocacy in general.

Maz - yes, i do double layer of cotton velour, overlocked around and knotted.
bamboo velour keeps softer for much longer, but of course, costs more to use.
what is an ok price to buy bamboo velour at? is this another fabric that varies in percentage and those numbers, as to the quality? i get mixed up with the gsm and the percentage bit with fleece and terry, let alone with velour LOL!!!
i'm thinking of making the initial training pants using cotton velour and once i have got the size and how to make them sussed, maybe making some with bamboo velour inner. Or maybe just the wetzone, sewn over the cotton velour?
my current idea is to make the Monkey Mile High soakers in fleece, with absorbent material inside. like an AIO trainer pullup. I have made this pattern up as a night cover for a friend's child, so i can do it as a cover ok. This style involves no FOE or elastic. it may be a bulkier trainer, oh well, i will just make one or two for bilby to try and see how she responds to them. WDYT? will this be too much like a nappy for her to "get" that they are undies? i wanted to avoid FOE and make it easy for her to pull up and down.
Oh, also my Pfaff wasn't top of the range, I think Paid about $360 for it.
I was looking at getting a singer but after explaining what I wanted it for she actually said the pfaff (which was cheaper then what I had my eye on) would be the better option. Hasn't missed a beat yet. Its a good learner/basic machine that has enough functions etc that I wont out grow it any time soon. It has ya fancy stitches too but I honestly rarely switch from my basic stitches.
GIgi, My pfaff didn't come with a walking foot, I got that extra. But it came with a heap of other feet. button hole, blind hem (which might be what your thinking for the thin close seams??) zipper, clear, quilting & a couple of others I don't even know their use LOL.
When making MCN I use my clear, walking & now my zipper foot. Zipper gives a great close top stitch.
Gigi with velour you want to get a nice thick one cos the thin stuff is a bugger to sew it moves and stretches everywhere......I have heard good things about the quality of the fairy fabrics bamboo velour in that it is not soo stetchy and holds it shape better when you are sewing. I have two diff veours that i got through coops and the difference is like night and day and it is all pretty much due to one being thinner and too stretchy and the other one being thicker.

Gigi - I got my velour from greenbeans. im not sure i its bamboo so im gonna have to check it out again. Will defently make some liners some time soon...have a very unsettled Mateauz and all I keep thinking is...i wish I could stick him on my BB :( to help. Im not sure what training pattern it is..but if I make one, will send one your way hun :)

Maz, Im pretty sure what I got was the end of the current model for that price. That was also almost 2 yrs ago. I think the price did jump a couple of hundred for the new model (that was the same) then the next up etc.

Sunshine great choice on the sewing machine. I nearly got that one myself as the lady at the sewing shop tried to sell it to me on the "Quilter's Choice" aspect. Instead I chose the more expensive one - 2nd from top before going to a combined embroidery/sewing machine in one. My friend has the QC and loves it. I only decided to go higher up as DH said to me to get the best and not worry about the money as he knows how much I sew. Plus I liked the idea of a wide neck (for shoving quilts through) and wide metal base (again for the quilts). I could have gone top of the range, but the only difference I could see was a built in walking foot, and I like to change feet all the time for different things. Hmmm.. yes, quilting is a little more complicated than that.. but I'll let you off :lol:
Gigi I got my bamboo fleece and velour from the bamboo fabric store. I can't remember where I got my last lot of bamboo fleece from (maybe a coop?) but I think I liked that stuff better. It was whiter, and not a brushed flleece (so all the loops were on the back rather than it being fluffy). The stuff from the bamboo store is thinner feeling and fluffy on the one side. With the unbrushed stuff I quite like it with the smooth side in, but this new stuff I will be sewing fluffy side in as I think it will retain it's fluff a bit better that way. I have sewn all my hemp inserts with the loop side in, but again I have always had hemp TERRY (unbrushed fleece) rather than fleece. All of Austy's inserts have been hanging around siunce he switched to medium pockets at about 2 months old, and he's only weeks off 3. They have all held together well and no lumpy bits. I prefer unbrushed fleece because I am sure you loose absorbency when they brush the loops out - I can imagine the fluff that would come off.
Fiona Clear feet are fantastic for top stitching aren't they!? My new machine's walking foot is clear and more open toed so very easy to see where I am sewing. I sewed all my nappies for AUsty on my old $299 basic Janome without a problem but must admit it's mnuch nicer and easier to get a professional finish with the new machine. If you scroll down on my blog you will see a pic of my mnachine with a quilt undre it, and slightly further a quilted cushion cover that I embroidered with Austin's name. ETA: Wow - not long to go now and you'll have a gorgeous newborn to cuddle!!!
Velour I got some nice stuff at Spotlight of all places (just cotton velour). I have never seen it there before and they only had mint and pale blue but I grabbed a couple of metres and am really happy with it. The bamboo velour from tghe bamboo fabric store has a bit more of a sheen to it, and VERY soft. I al,most feel it's a waste making nappies from it - I can imagine some beautiful soft baby clothes with it. But a friend told me she used bamboo velour once to line minkee nappies and she found it went a bit "crispy" after a few washes. I am wondering if it is the urine that does that though and it would be fine for clothes. Anyone know?:think:
I should be finishing a mini quilt for a swap tonight but have stayed home from work with a cold and am quite happily sitting on the couch knitting a soaker for bubs. Once I get started with one of those I just want to knit it tillk the end!

I had that same Velour I think. I got a candy pink, apple green (once) & a cornflower blue. I think it was about $10 a meter but a massive 160cm wide. I had heaps & heaps of it LOL

i've only bought the cotton velour that Spotlight sold MELBEL. i do find it tricky to sew with. it was especially tricky using it as a backing for bibs. i think it might be the same as what FJ got, cos those colours sound like what i got. but i got some other strong bright colours too, maybe from nappies covered, unsure now.
good to hear there are different grades of it, e.g at FF.
FJ - i just LOVE the clear foot! i think the machine i looked at DIDN"T have a clear foot and that put me off!. cos i asked, could i pay extra for a clear foot!! it's been a few months since i looked at machines, i'm getting mixed up, with which machine had what!

jgal the velour that I've used from BFS does go a bit stiff after a while I have found. Also it has developed a bald patch :o
My SL never got cotton velour (or the staff I asked over the course of a few weeks after FJ got hers were totally clueless). I have some coming that I ordered through bubblebubs that has been on the way for weeks now. I think the ship is still coming as it was a preorder!
FJ my new sewing machine has a sack of feet too. I'm quite smitten with the 1/4 inch one. Makes top stitching a dream :D Check out if you have one of those ones too.
Sarah the way to tell if the bamboo has been washed is to rub it between your fingers and if you feel there is a feeling on your fingers of a residue then it hasn't been. After handling so much of it doing two co-ops I find it easier to tell that way. I still have some unwashed too.
If you're still not sure then the pile on the fleece will be a tad fluffier and the fibres can look a little clumped together in spots. Best to wash it again to be on the safe side because if it shrinks after you sew it will look out of shape and the size will be wrong. I'm sure the manufacturers said allow 1-2cm per metre for shrinkage so it could be an issue.
All this sewing talk has got me rearing to finish off the stuff I have got cut out but I have a busy weekend coming up with a housefull of visitors (hmmm don't go there...if they weren't such nice people I would have told DH to stick it!). Too much to do unfortunately.

I thought I had a clear foot for this piece of junk machine, I suppose I do but it is a funny looking foot. The new machine has one though :dance: That means when this bubs name is decided on, I can make another appliqued name blanket for him like Noah's except it might look nicer :lol:
I checked out Nappycino, long enough to find me some cheap cotton pul so I grabbed a big chunk :D It was red with motorbikes, Noah will love it. Now I just need some black suedecloth, elastic , some H&L and my QC and I will be laughing. I might get that spotlight pattern after all incase my drafting skills are useless, I would hate to waste all that fabric just because I cut it in the wrong spot. :lol:
Raven, Yep the bamboo fleece is in a washed condition, It feels so soft! I might give it a second wash before I use it to make sure of the shrinkage though.
Jgal, nice DH!!! At least he knows the value of getting something good from the start instead of constantly needing to upgrade which costs more in the end. I will have to check out your blog now. For the fabric swap I was thinking 3-4 nappy cuts of a selection of minkee, plain PUL, printed PUL, velour, microfeece, cotton knit jersey, quilters cotton (for those that like woven cotton outers). Each person involved would list
1) their preference for fabric type(s)
2) their preference for colours
3) what they would prefer NOT to receive (as they may have more than enough of a certain fabric or colour in their stash)
4) Whether it's for a boy/girl or prefer unisex stuff
You would send 3-4 DIFFERENT fabrics as the idea is to be able to make 3-4 different nappies since many of us buy fabric by the metre (or half metre) which means that without swapping we'd have a few nappies the same, or extra leftovers in our stash. The swap is designed to help us all have exciting new fabrics to sew with for each nappy. As a group we would select a date to send it out by so that everyone knows when to expect it to arrive.
How does that sound?

That's okay Maz - I think everyone should list a few fabric preferences so that it's a bit easier. Even if you have to send two of the same fabric type you could make them different prints. Also if those who want to participate have something that they have a lot of (or none of) let me know by PM and I will try to match people up based on preferences.

I got some Malden Mills Powder Dry in black 80x160 for $8 I hope that is a bargain :lol: Is that what you would class as a stay-dry fabric? I tried doing a google search on the powder dry and didn't come up with anything so was unable to find out for myself. I assume it is the fabric that goes next to the bum though.
I just had a bird fly into my window and flop around for about 2 minutes, I thought it broke it's neck, it is calm now but just standing and not moving much, I hope it is okay. I don't deal well with hurt animals or people for that matter. I started crying and Noah was looking at me like whats the matter?? Good thing my dog isn't here or it would become breakfast :cry:
