TOO LATE!!! I bought some gorgeous yellow with lady birds print fleece so have to find a noice embroidery of a lady bird to put on the outside
Gee - it was silent in here last time I looked! I took my attention away from nappy making to 3rd birthday presents, baby gifts and a nappy BAG, and poke my head back in to see you all chatting again. Please don't stop now or else I'll think I smell or something... :P
Maz -I'm sure you'll have the nappies mastered in no time given you're already a pro at covers! ;) I have only made a couple of covers before - much prefer the nappies even though they are more complex. Not sure about te black myself - I still don't dress Austy in black (or skulls... perhaps I'm not modern enough), but I think I could be swayed by a ladybird cover for a little girl.:heartbeat:
Just having a break from said nappy bag now, it's huge but will be great for dragging around my cloth stash.
Tarkine - while I'm happy to sew PUL pockets (have made over 100 since preggas with Austy) I too am afraid of plain PUL covers that have FOE on the edges. The covers I made were microfleece inner and outer with PUL in the middle so it was almost like making a pocket nappy anyway. They were super quick to make though.
I went and ordered some fabric yesterday - I needed moire hemp terry for inserts for my pockets, because I didn't want to waste all my bamboo fleece doing the 100% out of that, since DS had nappy chages every 1- 1.5hrs every time he fed and in my naivity back then I made the inserts out of three layers hemp terry. They actually worked although by the time he was in mediums I had to add extra layers. I'm expecting the bamboo would hardly get wet in a newby nappy, so think hemp might be better placed there. While I was there of course I ordered more minkee... not that I need it but hey, gotta make the most of the postage right?! :D
OH you are terrible...do tell what minkee did you get...I get such a high on buying minkee now a days...it use to be nappies but sadly we dont need anymore.
i got some cheetah...tarzan looking stuff taht im playing with tonight
I was tempted by some zebra print like Austy's blueberry trainers I never get to see anymore because he TT'ed like someone flicked a switch (not that that is a bad thing with this bub just around the corner) but I ended up getting some pale pink dot minkee, and chocolate gelato.
I want to embroider the chocolate, and the pale pink is to go under the pink dress I recently made on my blog. Now my blog says we don't know what we are having but I already revealed it on BB that we are excitedly expecting a little girl this time so that is the real reason I decided to keep the pink dress I originally made as a newborn gift. I couldn't help myself.
I had thought about making an AIO or two for Austin since he still wears his very deteriorated bubblebubs to bed for afternoon naps, so was eyeing off the leopard (so very BamBam..) but when I picked him up at childcare yesterday a tad early he was still asleep. I changed him into fresh clothes as we were off to a mum and son photoshoot (some cute very pregnant bump cuddles) and didn't even realise he was wearing jocks until the carer told him it was time to go to the toilet since he had just woken up. He still wets during his naps ast home but I think it's because we don't wake him up and he tends to lay there for a little before he calls out to come out of his room (we shut the door to keep the cat out). I know as soon as I made him new nap nappies he'd be nap trained, and figure the cute stuff is best spent on the bub where they will be seen!
Hey maz - I just checked your store to eye off your covers and saw that your wipes are square. Do you find it annoying to thread in the overlocker ends?
I rounded the corners on all of mine just so I could stitch around them in one swoop and therefore have only one end to thread in.
Better get back to that nappy bag - I would rather make nappies, but it won't sew itself...
do you guys use patterns to sew the PULs or do you just create them? my creativity is limited to be sewing square prefolds.
Maz - I'll keep my eye out for the ladybirds (hehe).. ohh I'm so naughty, but I just love the look of the different covers on babies bums!! much more interesting than sposies :)
Jgal - the covers sound great :)
Well I have all the materials I need to start making a few pockets now, I just need the machine and the time. I had someone make an order for 20 of my tote bags which will take a considerable amount of time and they need them by the 15th of December :o
I might have a bit more time on my hands though since my laptop is getting sent in for repairs as it won't even start. I am on my old Sony Laptop that is a nightmare to use so I spend less time on it as a result
Sounds like everyone is busy which is great! Little busy sewing bees  It really is a form of therapy isn't it?
Yay! I made my first PUL cover today, using the Wee Wekka pattern. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out although the FOE was a bit scary for me! Pic in blog if you want to see.
WTG girls...must be busy cause it dame quiet in here lol.
I just cant go FOE jgal and pUL ....blah sorry babe but I have really sensitive kids and as soon as PUL goes near their butts bango :( sux big time cause there are so many gorgeous PUL prints out to..
Ive beendying some bamboo velour...needed to do something different.....hope it works out the way I hoped for...(It hasnt but hey at least I tried :) )
That's half the reason why Austy's covers were microfleece outer and inner with PUL sandwhiched between, and the covers were turned&topstitched Maz. My boy wasn't sensitive, but overnight the PUL against his skin did irritate a little bit so I figured the fleece would be more comfy. But it is warmer, and for me, fleece on it's own wouldn't work. I tried staccinators which are a double layer of MM fleece and it didn't hold up to my little firehose kid, so I made mine with the PUL inside. The PUL covers for this bub will be to go over my fitteds I have made, so I am hoping it will be fine since there is so much coverage with the nappy itself.
Off to cut out some PUL pockets - that's all I used for the first 6m last time, and I only have 2 made up so far!! I might get sidetracked though as I have some yummy minkee here wanting to be made into AIO's!!
hi all,
im new to this forum n to the whole cloth nappy business. Bub is 8wks tomoro! time flies...
anywyz, ive been making some wipes by hand since my visit to Spotlight last week and now im just waiting for material in the mail this week then i can start experimenting.
im new to using a machine so it'll be interesting. But this thread is going to be helpful as im sure to come across alot of problems :P
Quick question: Is it hard to sandwich PUL between layers? I like the idea of having microfleece as the outer but Im not a fan of using covers...
hi can I join in here too?
I'm due in march and to start with am going to make prefolds and some PUL covers :)
I have some hemp for the booster layers, and going to buy the bamboo double sided terry for the layers that come in contact with baby (mmm its so silky soft!), need to order that soon so I can start sewing over christmas break! I bought a snaps machine and some FOE and a piece of PUL to make my first attempt at a PUL cover :) I have a stack of free patterns, but I am pretty sure I have the Wee Waka pattern, and after seeing JGals handywork I reckon I'll give it a go! what an awesome job you've done!
Jgal - on ur blog too I noticed u did embroidery on bibs. did you make the bibs yourself? I assume u used an embroidery machine to do the embroidery? they look sooo cute anyway :D
hi girls,
Have been making some prefolds - various combinations of bamboo, microfleece and flannie, will try them out. Bought a pattern from SL for the covers. Waiting for a package of fabric and will try making the AIOs.
Thanks Mrs C - I just embroidered the bibs (with my embroidery machine). I was going to make some but found a 5 pack really cheap at woollies so just bought them. Definitely give the wee weka pattern a go - it was quite easy. I have since made a pink one (but can't blog it because I have only mentioned on BB that we are having a little girl) and used some satin FOE I could buy at my local sewing store, just turned it inside out so it looks the same as the normal nappy stuff rather than bra elastic.
Boo! It's soooo quiet in here. I haven't made as many AIO's as I would have liked yet, but I guess it's a good thing as my baby turned out to be a big one. I bought a couple of ittis and magicalls, the small ittis she has almost grown out of already at just 1 month old! So I will use my minkee cuts to do medium embroidered nappies instead. I downloaded som "Princess" ewmbroidery designs the other day so will have some fun embroidering nappy cuts when the weather cools a bit and Madelyn settles a bit easier at night.
yeah it has been quiet in here...I havent started making the nappies yet, but I've got out the overlocker and used it a couple of times so am ready to get going :) thanks to a thread I found somewhere on the internet I know I nede to increase the diff feed and decrease foot pressure and hopeuflly thatll stop the bamboo from stretching! so will post photos as soon as I've made my first one...hoping to start tonight or tomorrow night :) ahh I wish I wasnt working still lol!
Hello ladies, I hope you don't mind if I join you in here??? :DI just started making my own nappies for bubba who is due on the 16th March.... I have made the mama bird one and the wee waka one, still got a few more to try out though...... At the moment I'm just using flannie and terry flats to make them up, oh and some polar fleece, kinda like demo models if ya like! Cos I didn't want to pay a bundle on nappy fabrics and stuff them up!!!! Seeing which pattern I like the best, or I might modify a bit yet.... We shall see......
Hi Vanessa good idea! My first attempts were pretty sad so I'm glad I didn't waste any good stuff on them
I've been close to dragging out the machines again. When the boys are back at school and we get a few cooler days I'll be into it. Been looking at the horn cabinets on ebay as I'm sick of having them take over the table and my wardrobe. Going to make me a sewing nook :D
hi Vanessa! well u're doing better than me, I didnt even get INTO the sewing room like I hoped to and now the weekend is over and I have something on every night/day this week :S with this heat I've just had all my energy zapped out of me :( you're due a week before us! very exciting :)
Yeah, it's been pretty warm here too.... Spent the day at the beach yesterday and now I have red spotches on my legs - missed those parts with the sunscreen apparently, and the tops of my feet.. OUCH!!!!!!
I must admit I hate the cutting out part, don't really have anywhere that is suitable to so it and it's too hard to get up off the floor now...
My bestest cutting out place is on the ironing board while sitting on the couch and watching the teev :D
I'm blessed cause my parents bought me a folding cardboard cutting out table for my sewing for christmas and its divine! prior to that, I just had a folding cardboard cutting board that was like $12 from spotlight and put it on the dining table!
Oh Raven... I am allowed to get a Horn too, but it has to be second hand... so I am paitently waiting for one to come on ebay...
Vanessa - I have made a few pockets and fitteds from the wee weka. They are not too bad. But my sewing is terrible... but getting better with each one. I have a tonne of hemp to make up more fitteds... But I need to get some machine time... and now being back at work it is proving too be hard.
Vanessa - ouch to the sunburn! hope u had some aloe vera gel to rub on it!!
good luck finding a second hand horn cabinet girls...I have one and I love it, love that it can fold down nice and small if needs to
Yeah, aloe vera works wonders!!!! Haven't had the chance to sew much more so far this week, maybe this afternoon or thursday I'll get another chance..... I hope so anyway, got some PUL so can now start with 'proper' waterproof nappies..... Looking forward to my collection growing......
hehe very exciting Vanessa! you should post some photos so we can see!! what colourPUL did u get? I noticed nappyworks has lots of stuff on sale atm...I really wanna buy some but not sure I can afford it till payday which isnt till the 14th lol (we get paid monthly). am gonna get some cotton velour to make wipes as welll! so many pretty colours hehe
Hey Rufalina where do you live? Hope we don't end up bidding against eachother on ebay. I hate how we can't see the names of the other bidders anymore!
Cardboard MrsC? How sturdy is it?
Ive started scanning ebay for a sewing cabinet aswell...all Sammi's fault
i usually cut out on the lounge floor while im watching tv and Vanessa I remember only to vividly trying to get up while 36 weeks pg
Ive got to get my overlocker serviced soon...making some very masculine noises
hehe the cardboard is actually fairly sturdy for cutting out on. The table I got is a Baraque one, it folds away too. obviously its not as strong as a real table so you cant lean all ur weight on it, but its really good :) their website is their name with com au on the end :)
hehe I couldnt resist anymore so I bought a few bits of nappyworks, most of it was on sale...except for the super cute winnie the pooh PUL I bought hehe! so have got some velour coming for cloth wipes, and a couple of pieces of PUL for wash bag and nappy covers :D
I am in Sydney... So we should be Ok on the ebay front.
Maz - at your overlocker comments
MrsC you have me tempted to go shopping too..... must resist.......must resist.......
Maz I am bidding on one ATM but there is another which I'll email you the link for. It's got the overlocker bit but it's too small. Not not worth it IMO. I went to melb sewing centre and sat at one the same for 5 mins.
There are other types that have the longer overlocker bit and that is the one you want. Now I've shared that info with you I guess I'll have to fight you for one
Good on ya MrsC! Can't wait to see your creations :)
PH please do Sammi...:) need a pick me up big time
MrrsC - dont forget to scan ebay for material and such...you'd be surprised what you can find on there. IM waiting for some motorbike cotton and some skull fabric cant wait
My mum got a new horn cabinet for her birthday , and it is beautiful. It is huge (Decor Mk2)... and it helped me sway DH into letting me get one. But I am struggling to find one close to me... Oh well keeping on trying... Good luck with your ebaying girls!!!
ive also gone to the secondhand shop here in town and let them know that im after one....the owner says she gets people in all the time wanting to sell them and has knocked them back :o
oh my goodness maz!! I cant believe they would knock them back! they're such awesome cabinets u'd think they'd sell pretty easy! thanks for the ebay tips too :) I can just see my stash growin with more and more nappy fabric I'm not getting time to sew...ah well, she who dies with the most fabric wins right? doesnt have to be dress fabric rofl!
good luck with the bids girls! I just bid on some covers on B4B, thinking it would be good to have a couple in case my first attempts don't quite work right lol!
I just got some white PUL, using it as a hidden layer under polar fleece..... Unable to sew today cos my feet are swollen they are throbbing if they are down on the floor, so have been looking at the stuff I cut out the other day miserably.....:wall: Oh well, I did do one nappy but feet were so sore after that one...
Thanks for the ebay tips too girls, might have a look at the fabrics there, and see how we go.......:D
besides flannelette, what material is good for making wipes? im after pretty looking ones...would lightweight cotton work?
I wanna sew tomorrow (even though it will be 40 degrees so I would prob change my mind) but my inlaws are arriving in the mornign so I cant exactly go hide in the sewing room..plus my sis is coming too and shes gonna be sleeping in the sewing room so I have to fold down the tables and stuff to make room for her lol! oh well!
Vanessa - not good re the swollen ankles and pain :( u poor darling! u need a machine like mine where tehres a stop start button so u dont need to use the pedal to make it sew then u could have ur feet up lol! it has its benefits sometimes
teruteru - I heard cotton velour is devine for cloth wipes, good at gripping etc, so I have just bought some from nappyworks, they have beautiful colours!!
