Where do you buy a cheap "snap" machine? is that what it's called?? :lol: the machine that makes the snaps for the MCNs you know what i mean.... any websites i can look at? TIA :D
Also, to make a decent MCN look good, do you girls all have over lockers?? or can you get away with just a sewing machine??
Sarah - MM...hmmm its an outter fabric the is ment ot be water proofe....im not to much in the know with MM but im sure someone else could help
Ren honey - go to greenbeans but put nz on the end (IFYKWIM) they snap machines are smaller and cost aprox $85 including postage but dont come with any extra's otherwise you can get one from snaps australia were you get the whole lot, dies and snaps for $120
I am pretty sure the Powder Dry of MM is like microfleece. Im pretty sure GiGi would be upto speed witht hat though. She is the Fabrics Quenn I believe!
Ren, You can get away with just sewing machine. Turn & top stitch etc. just gives you a different style of MCN.
Snaps Australia is your other snap place to go, but I think Maz found greenbeans to be cheaper

I'm not a fan of the velcro MCN's so wanna try making one with snaps.
The machine and bits and pieces is cheaper than i thought it would be.
Ren I got my snap press from greenbeans and am really happy with it! I've used the snaps australia type too and prefer the greenbeans one.
Talking of fabric stashes, I've been digging about and oh man have I got a serious fabric buying issue :redface:
I got my snap press back when they weren't available in Australia, so got it from the US and waited months for slow postage (due to the weight it would have cost the earth to get here faster). You girls are so lucky to get them here now. Definitely size 20 for nappies - I used 16's on all my small npockets last time (all 24!!!) and found that if he kicked his legs too much they popped open. So I got 18's for the rest - in the US where I bought my snap press they sold long prong 18's which have an 18 cap and a 20 working piece (stud/socket). Great to get through the thicknesses and not too bulky, but there isn't alot of difference between the 20's and 18's as I have some coloured snaps from snaps Australia in the 20 size and they still fit in my 18 cap die, but just get a little stuck and need to be tugged slightly to pull out after snapping. Not enough of a problem to buy a new cap die, unless I bought loads more 20 snaps.
omg Raven, i can so relate to having a fabric buying problem.. My hubby got home yesterday from Germany and didnt buy me a damn thing! So he gave me what money he had left after changing currencies and i got a SL visit with $95 :D He knew that would make me happy lol
Hi girls, I have been sewing :D
Today I embroidered two nappy cuts, one for a Christmas nappy that I need to find some red velour for the inner before I can sew it up, and one little blue fox that I have turned into an AIO tonight. I have only ever made one AIO before and I basically copied a Bubblebubs but added extra layers as Austy's Bubblebubs just weren't making the distance for his 2-3hr naps.
This one I drafted myself from scratch and when I put it next to the very baby nappies and fuzzi bunz it looks about right for size so my fingers are crossed that it's not just ornamental ;) Here are the pics:

I need a bit more practise with the velcro (soooo reliant on my snap press!), and probably didn't need the fold over tabs since I used HTH velcro which doesn't really stick to anything, but just to be safe, and more practice! I did a whole bamboo fleece body layer that the soaker pad is stitched to so it's a tad bulky - not sure if I would switch that for flannel next time, like bubblebubs have (Austy's have been worn to death so the flannel is exposed on a couple :redface:). It's nice and soft though...

Looks good jgal! That HTH does stick to other stuff I have found but it tends to be other velcro nappies that can end up really rough looking. I reccon it's the worse for coming off it's laundry tabs. The normal velcro is better for that.

Very quiet in here lately... is everyone busy sewing? I made bub her first Christmas AIO the other night so I will blog it tonight to give you all something to chat about. I embroidered the bum, this time with a reindeer and used a tute to help me roll the fleece in on the legs - it worked a treat!
**** Bertha is back in the house!!!!! I havent used her yet...she has been my personal bribbery in getting so many much needed to be finished orders done. so one more week and I can play again!!!
I have finally bitten the bullet. I made my very first AIO last night :) for one of the clothy girls who pg with number 3.....I bought the most gorgeous material from Spotisville last week and I just had to make a newborn out of it. It has ahidden booster on the inside, hidden PUL and a nioce booster to match the nappy.
No wonder you girls love making nappies..**** it is so nioce and fun to do after making covers (boring) for so long. I could so soon get addicted to making these

Oh Maz, yay for getting your machine back!!!!! And now, you have so inspired me to get out the machine and get my pockets done... My DH is finally on leave from next week, and I have made him promise to take the baby and give me a some time with my machine to get the nappies made...

I use to be so scared of venturing into making nappies full stop!!! Ithink it was the comfort factor of being able to make covers for so long but OMG I now need to get busy....I hav eos many yummy quilters cottons I can play with

Hey this might sound a little nuts but is much sewing ability required for wipes??
nope.
Get your 2 pieces of cloth (I use flanno on one side, terry on the other) and sew them together wrong-side-in leaving a spot to turn them inside out.
Use a straight stitch to join them, and if you don't have an overlocker then use a short zig-zag to go around the edges, to stop fraying.
Turn them right-side out and go around the seam with either something decorative (zigzag) or straight to keep it all in place :)

ok.. I have some flannie, bamboo singled sided terry and some bamboo fleece - am going to try and make some prefolds.
Was going to do bamboo fleece, flannie (as the insert) and more bamboo fleece... would it be better to do it the other way around with the bamboo as the booster in the middle and just a flannie cover??
Any advice or hints are welcome (first timer here :).. Also have some fabric that I've forgotton if it is microfleece or microfibre - any help is more than welcome :)
microfleece is like polar fleece jumpers, but with smaller nubly bits.
microfibre is very absorbant and if you rub your hand over it, will catch on any rough bits. good luck

the water will just pass through microfleece, it needs something absorbant behind it ...

for nappy outers of pockets, aio's, also to make covers out of
PUL
pro=care
malden mills fleece 200wt *use double layer, or 300wt *use single layer
polar fleece *use double layer
wool (once it's lanolised)
then there are fabrics like minkee that come in two types
minky laminated to PUL
separate layer of minky, over separate layer of PUL
see places like fairy fabrics, nappiescovered, bubba earth, the weewuns, nappyworks for MCN fabrics, notions (aplix, elastic etc) and snaps australia for the snaps. lots of other sites, they are just the first ones i coudl remember.

Doing it this way would reduce the bulk a great deal. What I have done is to have a layer of bamboo with a booster sewn to it sandwiched between the flanelette layers. Add an extra lay in booster of bamboo (2 or 3 layers and cover it with the flannel to match the nappy body) and you will have a great looking and absorbant nappy :D:

I am definitely not going to venture into the PUL patterns - just stick with prefolds :).. leaving that one up to the experts! :)

PUL scared the crapola out of me...I didnt know what i was doing properly but da da...i worked it out and it sort of works for me now :)

lotsa black polar fleece - i can invision Maz covers with an applique of skulls on it, and candy pink something - that part of the dream is a bit fuzzy. but lotsa people love putting bubs in black and pink together.
i think cherub's kiss did a special edition once of skulls on roses, that was very popular.
or a red spider, on the black cover.
or a red ladybug?
or an apple with a worm coming out of it?
or a red love heart?
so many simple outline objects, in a vivid colour, or white, would contrast beautifully against black.
