I'm pretty sure that if you contacted someone like Greenbeans or Fairy Fabrics, they wouldbe happy to post you a scrap of a range of fabrics if you explain why you want it. There might be a small cost, but I'm sure it would be worth it. I've also made a bunch of my own nappy related stuff, (wet-bags, breast pads, boosters, prefolds and a few other nappies and covers) and it's definitely worth getting the fabrics from a specialist nappy shop. It isn't worth a whole lot of time, effort and money if you find that the nappy is not very absorbant and leaks, so you can use it anyway. You can always use old towels as boosters and so on, but for the main part of the absorbent fabric, I wouldn't.
