I used to take it for my skin/acne when I was younger.
I think people take it to improve their joints if they have troubles and also for athritis...

I was researching ways to deal with my DD's constipation and it is recommended to help with that....

I think that it is generally good for you because it is a natural source of omega 3s, A very important oil as it is a neural building block. Vegetarians don't get much of it as they don't consume fish (a high source) so they consume fish oil.

I'm sure there is more that it is good for too!

ETA: sorry that is supposed to say "that they consume flax seed oil" not fish oil! I was typing that at past midnight last night and should obviously have been in bed!!

I do - it is a good source of omega 3 for vegetarians. I don't eat fish so through pregnancy and BF it helps bubs brain.

It is also good for hair, skin & nails as well as weight regulation for me.

I take it in capsule form but have had it in oil form previously (it tends to repeat on me in that form though)

    I take it for fun!

No, actually for Omega 3s. I don't really like it that much, but I gotta do it.

    Flax Seed Oil

Flax seed is a great plant source of Omega 3 oils, but you need to remember that we only convert & absorb about 3% of plant sourced Omega 3 oils. That is why the therapeutic dose for fish oils is just over a teaspoon a day, whereas you need a couple of tablespoons of flax seed oil to meet this requirement. Flaxseed oil is best hidden in yoghurt, blended into smoothies, or used in salad dressings. You should never cook with flaxseed oil, as it is a very unstable oil. I recommend squeezing a couple of vitamin E oil capsules into your newly opened flaxseed oil, shaking it well, and keeping it in the fridge. The other option is eating flaxseeds (linseeds) then you get all the healthy plant lignans, protein and fibre and there is less chance of rancidity. They can be added to breakfast cereals or freshly ground and added to yoghurt or smoothies.

Some other great vegie sources of Omega 3 are walnuts, chia seeds, pecans, some seaweeds, rocquette and other leafy greens.

    20g of flaxseeds contains 4,500mg Omega 3s
    20g of walnuts contains 1,800mg Omega 3s
    100g tofu contains 181mg Omega 3s
    50g raw spinach contains 70mg Omega 3s
    100g hazelnuts contains 87mg Omega 3s

Hope this is helpful - it is really important for vegetarians & vegans to supplement their diet during preg and bf so their little one gets enough DHA for wonderful nervous system development and life-long health benefits.

I use to give it to DD for her eczema but didnt see much of an improvement. Then i read about it not being scientifically proven that flaxseed works. Starting DD on fish oil soon.
