Gifts for parents of a premmie baby

DH's nephew and wife welcomed a beautiful baby girl yesterday. Mum has some health problems and baby was born 2 months early weighing only 1.2kgs. It looks as though she will be spending the next two months in hospital, and I can only imagine how nephew and niece will be feeling.

I gather it is going to be very draining on them, lots of back and forth and just the emotional toil of not having their baby home and in their arms whenever they like. So I'd like to send them some gifts, like a care package, and I'd like to know what kind of things would be appreciated?

I want to send some clothes for bub because that's always the most exciting part for me and I gather they may not have had much shopping time for tiny clothes yet. What size would they need and where can I even get them that small?

But I also want to get things that will make life easier for mum & dad and this is where I'm stuck. What can I get them?

What about a Care package with things like long life milk, myself bars, those individual cereals. Things that they might not have time to buy but will come in handy when they are trying to catch a quick bite either at the host or home.

Clothes - look at Earlybirds They make clothes for babies from around 1kg+. They're not only gorgeous, they're structured so medical stuff can get around them. If you're crafty I have a pattern for prem bubs' smocks too.

If you're nearby you could make up a heap of frozen meals for them? Or get them a gift voucher for a restaurant close to the hospital bub's at so they can have a nice meal?

    Thanks guys

Teni I wanted to do meals but I'm not very close and can't get there with the kids. The voucher is a good idea though!

And how cool that you can get clothes specifically for little bubs with medical gear, will definitely check it out!

I know Baby Bunting has smaller sizes too. I would put in a notebook and pen, hand lotion and lip stuff for a bit of spoiling, nice biscuits, just things to keep them occupied when they are waiting for tests or procedures as well as practical things that they might need but haven't got time to get.

I'm second guessing myself now - I *think* it's Earlybirds that do the ones I'm thinking of

You can also get fruit baskets- everyone gets lots of chocolates but new mums (especially if they are having some bowel issues from pain killers) appreciate lots of fruit! I've seen ones that you can get through gift delivery basket things but if you make your own it would be cheaper.

Maybe if it isn't sorted already, organise breast-pump hire for her? Expressing and establishing feeding is such a long haul, a good breast pump is a life saver.

What about a housecleaner voucher? - I'm sure that they wont have time to keep the house in order - or keep up with washing etc - or they might prefer to save it for when Bubs is able to come home and Mum/Dad are too tire to attend to it

An online grocery credit or order?
Newborn Photography session/voucher? (For now or later)

Where are they located Teeki - I wonder if some local BB'ers could deliver some meals on your behalf?

Re: Gifts for parents of a premmie baby

When my first premmie was born I had already been in hospital 2 weeks and was several hours away from home which meant I lived at the hospital until he was discharged. The best gifts were things like snacks, fresh fruit and a good hand cream. As he was my first and I hadn't got to buy any clothes I actually really enjoyed doing that myself, my mum came down one day towards the end of his NICU stay and took me out shopping for the day and we bought clothes, stroller, cot, etc then. However as they already have children things will be different for them obviously. I really like the idea of a care package, one thing I really wish I had done was kept a diary with all his milestones, setbacks, my feelings, etc.

    Hope that helps!
