is this how i do it?

Hi everyone i have a question about premmie babies. When i was 31 weeks my membranes ruptured and i went into hospital as my waters were slowly leaking and they were worried about infection. Exactly one week later at 32 weeks i spontaneously went into labour and had my beautiful son. He was almost 4 pounds and did fantastcally and is now 7 weeks old and doing great and i have almost forgotten how hard having my baby in hospital was. My question is..... is this what my body does? The doctors cant tell me if it will or wont happen again its one of those random things that happen. Has anyone else had experience with this? Has this happened more than once to anyone? or can it happen once and then never happen again?
    I would love any input
    Thanks heaps
    Take care

    hi Nay

I remember another member having a similar question on BB awhile back, sorry I cant remember who I dont have any advise or experience with this but hopefully someone will for you. Yes these things do seem random so next time around I'm sure you have every chance of going full-term.

It is hard to have your baby in hospital for an extended period of time, I think it is still hitting me too esp when you look back at the photos. Congratulations on the birth, I'm really happy to hear that all is going so well for you. What did you name him?

Nay, glad to see you pop in. Is Linkoln doing well? I suppose it depends on the reason why it happened? It may have just been a one off thing and your next pg will go to term. A woman I know had her second child at 28wks and then went full term with her third (the first was also term).

I just wanted to give you some hope...

My mum had my bro 8 weeks, via c/s, in 1993. He spent 2 months in hospital.
She then went on to deliver my other brother VBAC, no complications, in 2001 at 42 weeks exactly. She went into labour a few hours before her induction was scheduled! They left the next day, happy and healthy

    Hi Nay,

congratulations on the birth of your son.

Like Kat said earlier i had PROM at 32w5d with my son and delivered him at 33w3d.
My OB told me that PROM happens to approx 5% of pregnant woman and some for no apparent reason.

So falling pregnant again obviously the same question was on my mind. I have been told since having had it happen once my changes of PROM re-occuring again have gone up to about 16%. So still a low percentile but higher then the chance it would have happened last time.
I am currently 32w1d today and very nervous about what the next week will mean.
my OB has very very thougher though i have had extra ultrasounds, as well as a course of anti biotics once a month for the past 3 months. This is all only precautions because there was no real reason it happened the first time.

So every check up all looks fine, fluids are normal, placenta looks good, cervix good length and bub looks good, no reason to beleive something will happen but then again no reason last time either.
I have done a lot of reading up about prom and come across many stories of woman going FT after a previous rupture, but also read stories of it re-occuring. I found a good website with lots of info on prom called kanalen.org/prom

How long was your son in hospital for? I hope he is doing well and that you are coping well too, sometimes having a prem and the tough journey you guys are going through doesnt hit you till a bit later so always good to find a good support network early on if you can.

    hello nay.
My daughter was born 2 weeks early as she had stopped growing, But my son was born at 30weeks because i started bleeding at first it was just a little on a pad, but it got worse to the point where it was running down my legs and i had big clots. i have to have a c - section as they said mine had ruptured to. they couldnt tell me why or how it could have happened only that it does to some people.

    HI Nay,

I am very different to most but i have had 5 children (all still with me got to love big families) that were born prem. I am a very rare person but i do know of others simliar to me having reoccuring prems. My babes were born, 36, 29, 28, 26, 28 weeks prem. We have spent many many months ( i think we worked it out to be over a year) in NICU. The doctors can not give me a medical reason why i have PROM and they may never know why my body does things differently.

Why i tell you this is there are in some cases no reasons these things happen but i think we all deal with it when it happens and it may be a scary time but we have mechanisms to get through and come out alot stronger. I have since started a support group and try to give back now to those travelling the NICU journey or for those who have transitioned home and your question is one that we all as parents of NICU babes ask/ed after the 1st time or 2nd, 3rd times ( i know know i will have a prem every birth)

If you ever need to chat please feel free to send a pm my way.

Take care and enjoy your precious little one.

hi there, just throwing my story into the ring as well. first baby was PROM at 34 weeks 5 6 days, delivered same day. Second baby was induced at 38 weeks 3 days . Now 34 weeks with third baby and all fine so far. I was fully expecting the second and third to be early too but looks like the first PROM was just a once off for whatever reason.

Another story for you - a friend of mine had a premmie at 34 weeks for her first, second time around exactly the same scenario, her boy was delivered at 34 weeks. It seems she just goes into labour very early.

best wishes to you. im glad your little one is doing well.

I went into early labour at 23 weeks with my DS which they thankfully stopped and he was born at 42 weeks. This pregnancy I've had no false starts. I don't know if that answers your question but early labour did not repeat for me.

I had PROM with heavy bleeding & went into Premature Labour with my son and he was born at 27 weeks. I went into labour and he was born within 3 hours. Sadly they have given me no indication as to why it happened or if it will again but i just plan to take it easy with my next pregnancy as i know i will be closely monitored so that gives me some faith..

I'd just like to update that I had my son Tyron at 38w3d 2 weeks ago!
I did however have PROM again at 38w1d so exactly the same thing happened but atleast i was FT this time around.
Again for the second time there was no reasoning behind why it happened, must just be what my body does when bub has had enough inside. I definatley didnt have strep B or any other infection so i guess i just add to the percentile list of women it happens to and re-occurs.

I have had 2 prem babies, Maria was born 34+4 weighing 2.050kg and Sofia was born 34+6 weighing 1.810kg, still don't know why, but I do know the chance of it happening a 3rd time is up to almost 40%.
