How is it possible that this 500gram scrap is so smart? she is putting words together now... will try to pop in here more often ...sorry
It seems awhile since the last post - not sure if anyone will read my post, but I need to get these thoughts out of my head.
Madeline was born on Australia Day '08, at 31 weeks and 3 days and weighed 1180 grams (I had a severe case of pre eclampsia). Maddy went straight into NCIU, on CPAP - and was breathing unassisted by the next day. About two days later she went into SCN where she is to this day (although she was transferred from the Womens and Childrens hospital to the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide). Maddy upon leaving the WCH weighed 1305 grams and is now 1635 grams and off of her monitors as of today. She isnt sick - shes just small....
The midwifes and doctors have been very nice and usually helpful - but I just hate having to leave my baby in her humidicrib and not be able to bring her home. I know there are other mothers and families much worse off (I just read the post about Angel Baby Harrison), and I feel so lucky to have Maddy in my life - although shes just not around as much as I would like!
I'm having trouble with low breast milk supply - most midwifes say its because the breastpump is not as stimulating as having Maddy to my breast. In the last two days I've noticed a big drop in my supply levels and have been given a course of Domperidone to take. I still breastfeed Maddy twice each day to get her onto her suck feeds (and help get her out of SCN sooner) - and rarely does she need topping up via her tube feed.
Has anyone else who has been separated from their baby experienced this decrease in milk supply - can you share your experiences please? Was it just a short dip in supply which occurs naturally or did you do something else to fix the problem? I have been running about and tiring myself out a bit and need to slow down (maybe that's half my problem)?
My girls were both premmie (34 +4 nad 34 +6). With Maria my supply was not as good, I was running around everywhere when I was not at the NBC, not getting enough rest. I also was not drinking enough. I was told to drink more water, get more sleep and drink milky activite as well. With Sofia I was able to send Maria to my Mums and just spend more time feeding her and then resting, when she came home after 3 weeks so did just short of 5 litres of breastmilk. Hope this helps
Hi Leesa, Congrats on the birth of your beautiful daughter! I found that at around the 4-5 week mark I experienced a decrease in supply, and found that drinking more water and getting more sleep and also feeding Brendan as much as I could (at 4 weeks he'd only just started to suck so that was almost impossible) For memory it lasted around 2-3 weeks.
My advice is to slow down and take it easy, be kind to your self. Drink plenty of water (a NICU nurse told me I had to drink 600 ml every 3 hours) and get plenty of sleep too.
Good luck, all the best and hope you have your DD home real soon.
My daughter was born the same way! I developed HELLP at week 33+4 and she was born weighing 1.375kg. So I hear you on the "she is fine, just small"
I also had to express for her and tbh I did not have any trouble, BUT I expressed every two hours for 10 minutes per breast. I eventually had so much milk that I donated to the "boobymilk-store" for the less fortunate bubbas.
In that time I did drink alot, so try upping your water/ice tea intake and try getting some sleep. I know it's hard (I wish I had followed my own advice ) but you really need your sleep. After cuddles and bf'ing at the hossie, go home and rest. It's hard as hell to leave them there, but you have to look after yourself too
Goodluck and I hope she comes home really soon. :hugs:
hi Leesa congrats on your bubba i hope you have her home soon!
I dont hve any advice i just wanted to give you a I know it feels like time is dragging and it will be forever till you can take your little princess home. But just remember to look after yourself, This time will soon be a memory!
Take care and good luck!
xox
Leesa just wondering how your little girl is going, if she is home or close to it?
congratulations & if your going to make an early appearance what a great day to share with the rest of the country!!
We are doing ok Brendan has a cold at the moment, so quite a bit grumpy!!
He had his 12 month CHN check which didn't go as well.... Brendan has tongue-tie and has to see a speechy. He also has a "hole" in his stomach muscles which he has to see a physio for. Other than that good. lol
Brendan still hasn't cracked the 9kg mark he was 80gms off. lol
Going great here also Thanks for asking Nic. What are you doing for Nixon's 2nd birthday?? I am always interested. Collecting ideas for the future
Dd will be one year (corrected) on Saturday ... all I can say about that is GOSH!! Is'nt it strange how you remember some dates and forget the others?? I remember when she got her first tooth and took her first step, but if you ask me what date she sat up or crawled for the first time really, or gave her first smile. I know that one sounds stupid, about the smile, but I really don't know. I never knew if she was smiling, pulling her face or having gas
Sally, sorry to hear your little man is sick. Hope he gets better real soon. When are you starting him with the physio and the speechy *me like that word*
They haven't got back to me with dates, but for the speechy (lol) it's about a 4 week wait. And I'm not sure the physio can really help Brendan, because I have a feeling he has a hernia, which I'm not sure whether the physio can fix.
One of the things I hate is being a first time mum and not knowing things I probably should. I have no idea what is "normal" and what isn't... thats why his tongue-tie has only just been picked up (and was only picked up because his babble didn't sound right??? and also because he wont swallow anything other than mush) I didn't know that his babble sounded wrong... i thought it was just normal baby talk. poor lil man, this could have been fixed alot earlier! Thats also a down side to having 4-5 different people see him (we moved about 3 months ago).
Meh, i'll get over it.
Brendan has been home for 11 months today(6/3/08). His corrected age is 10 months and 1 day
Lucky a hernia is not that major opperation (compared to open-heart surgery) and that can be fixed chop-chop (no pun intended ) And about getting it fixed earlier, I am sure that he would not remember or mind. Sometime us mommies are WAY to hard on ourselves speaking from experiance!!
I hear you on how sucky you feel about being a first time mom and missing stuff. I did not even have friends/sisters/cousins that had babies first, so I was in uncharted waters with dd. And from the get-go my mom confessed that she was to "old" and we were small to long ago for her to really remember God bless her!! And I still don't know what is "normal" and what's not. I tend to rely on other ppl's comments, filtering out what I think is rubbish and just keeping an eye on the stuff that I feel might be a concern. If I am really concerned my poor gp has to hear me moaning And I tend to get smarter as I go along. Not that I am naive enough to think that it will ALL be helpfull with #2, but I don't worry about ppl commenting on her lenght or her weight. She is happy and growing and learning.
ROFL I am sooooo glad I am not the only one that remembers "silly" dates, kwim??
10th feb 2007 at 6:30pm my waters broke... and i was actually excited and fairly calm, i knew it was too soon, but also didn't realise how bad it was (i feel pretty stupid for having felt that way)
5/5/2007 Brendan's due date
5th/Nov/2006 at 4:30pm 16wks pg I had placental haemroging which they thought I would miscarry with.
I guess when you go through something so traumatic you remember a lot of the "silly" trivial things. Yet i've forgotten a lot of the more important things. I was only able to write Brendans journey through looking at pics taken and remembering the day i took it. lol
PSML Sally!! I had to check the date on the photo's and remind myself that the camera was one day early when writing down her stuff!!! And if it was not for my dad's very perfectionistic way of labeling digital photo's, I would probably had buggerd it up.
