Hammocks sold in Aus should most definitely be SIDS approved. The hammock needs to have good ventilation, be assembled and used correctly (there was a recall on hammocks in the States last year due to a couple of infant deaths however both were due to incorrect use and assembly) and really shouldn't be used once baby can roll over or pull themselves up.

That said, they are great! We used a bassinet until DD was 10weeks then moved her to her cot. She was a terrible day sleeper from about 5 weeks and loved being in the sling, in a cradle position, so we thought she'd sleep well in a hammock. We bought a Hushamock hammock and she loved it. I wish we'd bought it earlier as she was mobile (rolling, etc) before too long so we didn't get to use it for as long as I would have liked.

DD only had her day sleeps in the hammock as, I'll be honest, I wasn't comfortable with her being in it all night. I have no idea why! Maybe because I'd become quite attached to our movement monitor which I couldn't put in the hammock. But she had great day sleeps in it and we'll do the same with our next baby.

A close friend from my MG used an Amby hammock for months for all her daughters sleeps. Now, it unusual with a hammock but her daughter ended up with a really bad flat spot! She saw a chiro for several months to help correct it but it was terribly flat. I was sure hammocks were meant to be good for their head shapes but not in my friends daughter's case. Something to keep in mind or research.

Actually there are no Australian standards for bassinets or hammocks and Sids & Kids don't reccomend or approve any of them.

My DD slept in an Amby hammock in our room and i will use it again if we have another child. Love it.

the baby hammock was the main thing i wanted to hire, for a few months. Couldn't find any baby equipment hire places that had baby hammocks.

i've met so many people who rave about them.

i wish i'd NOT bought the plastic baby stuff i bought (when pregnant) and instead bought a baby hammock. hindsight is a wonderful thing.

so much baby stuff, IS a "try it and see" thing. it's hard to commit to the pricier items, when you don't know, until you try, whether your bub will love it or not.
