Baby MOnitors - which one do you use

Hi All,

I am just starting some research on the different types of monitors out there and boy are there options so I am wondering, which one do you have (if you have one), how you find it, do you like it and why that particular one.

I got scoffed at by a much older woman yesterday, when I was reading up on some and she made a comment to another lady about how mothers "these days" need technology to let them know their babies are crying. I simply said I live in a very large house and the nursery is in the back so I wouldn't hear bub otherwise (B!tch)

Do you think they are essential?

We have angel care sound and movement monitor with 2 pads and 2 handsets.

Love it shows room temp, baby breathing, baby noise. well worth the money!

and pffft to that rude woman you had to deal with!!

Hey Nae

We have the Angel Care Sound and Movement Monitor, with two sensor pads. For us it provided a bit more reassurance that we were looking for. If bubs stops breathing for 20 second or more it sets of an alarm.

It is not the cheapest monitor, but it has some great features aside from the obvious (detecting sound and breathing/movement). You can chose whether it detects either sound, sound and movement or just movement, there are number of settings for sesitivity (depending on how you are using it).

We also were able to use it with one sensor pad in the bassinet of our pram, which was DDs bed for 4-5 months, and it just came everywhere with us. Now she is in the cot we have both of the sensor pads, we also have used it the portacot.

It has a soft blue "night light" which is just enough to see what you need to see, but to disturb bubs, or enough to change a bum at night without putting on a big or bright light.

It really depends on what you are looking for, if you are not intereted in the movement component there are a lot of other monitors out there, I am just not sure which to recommend!

We have a monitor, but only because we got it in a package with our breathing monitor. But we have used it once and that was on my 30th because there was a fair bit of noise going on, and DH wanted to hear if DS was upset or not.

That being said though, we have a teeny tiny house, and thin walls, so there isn't a chance in hell we wouldn't be able to hear the kids.. lol

Don't let anyone scoff at you honey - its your baby - do it your way.

thanks for starting this post Nae, I will be following it as well. I still havent brought one, as I am undecided on the type and also if it is really essential.

PFFT to that rude woman.

We have a Fisher-Price one. It's simple, but really sensitive. Jazz is asleep right now (OMG praise the universe!) and when she rolls over I can hear her blankets rustle through the monitor. And its about 2m away from her! It has a night light on the microphone part which is good, gives just enough light to be able to see but not too much to make the room bright.

We did have a problem in our old house with interferance on one channel, but nothing in the new house. Not sure what the problem was, but just thought you'd like to know.

Yeah, pffft to her! I have used a monitor for both boys. It's so handy when I'm up the other end of the house or outside.

I use a Philips digital monitor, it has crystal clear reception, 2 hand-sets (one is really tiny and handy) and the baby's unit has a night-light. I love it

Lots of people love the Angelcare monitor (as you can tell from the other posts ), they really are a great monitor too.

Interestingly the Angel Care one is the one I liked the most so its great to have so many reviews on that one so far.

Mel, Winter and Feeb - She is one of the vollies I work with and has some pretty major issues anyway, I feel sorry for her a bit, her son died 2 yrs ago and she is so bitter on the inside. I just wish people didn't feel the need to mock others like this just because they didn't have the luxury of technology when they did it iykwim.

Nae, we've got a Orion monitor and it fantastic. Both units are tiny and the parent unit hangs on a cord around your neck. But having said that, we also have an Angelcare breathing monitor as a seperate unit, so it would have been cheaper to buy the all in one.

Definately an essential here, we have a two storey house and I can't hear anything upstairs if I'm in the kitchen.

i actually was very surprised with the costs of a baby monitor, and when i told my partner he didnt believe me. the cheapest one we have found was close to 200 dollars, and that was just at our local big w....

Im hoping to try and purchase one second hand somewhere.

angelcare sound and movement monitor with the 2 pads. It has a night light and tells you the temp in bubs room.. More then happy with it. highly recommend it.

only thing I took getting used to is there is no sound on the parents unit unless bub is making a noise. With most monitors there is a slight static noise but this one shuts off or something until there is a noise in bubs room.. I always worried it wasn't on the right channel or something but am used to it now

We purchased the Angelcare monitor also.

I have not used it as yet but have been told it is a very good monitor.

I have heard nothing but good reviews on it and I love that it tells you the room temp...
Baby unit can used with batteries and mains so I'm able to take it with me where ever.
