I didn't use one with DD1 but found a change table a god send with DD2, I have bought one that has a bath underneath this time around ... I was looking at the chest of drawers ones but the way our house is set up this in built bath is going to help me a lot.
I guess it's all just trial and error figuring out what works for you and what doesn't, if you do buy the one with the chest of drawers underneath then it won't be a waste (IMO) if you decide the change table part isn't for you because you'll still have the drawers
We have one of the ones that is a chest of drawers that is much deeper so that you can use it front on as a change table. It has been brilliant and with DS front on it means he has to try very very hard to roll off. And there is room for all the wipes etc.
And yes it really saves your back compared to doing it on a bed.
We've had one for all 3 kids and have always used it and used it alot. When the kids got bigger i did/do use the floor or a bed and yeh it really does take a toll on your back. I wouldnt be without one with a baby and found it definately worth it.
God I wouldn't be without a change table. We've sold ours but if we have another that is one thing I will definitely be buying. Changing on a bed hurts my back and it's good to have everything where you need it.
If you have the room for a change table then I think its money well spent... it really does save your back IMO! I used a change table for DD until she was about 2.5yrs & DS until he was about 1.5yrs (had to sell DS's due to going through a divorce & needing to stay in a tiny flat with no room for a change table, otherwise I would have continued to use it)
If you dont have room then the bed or the floor works fine
Im currently pregnant with my first but I found a change table for sale for $50.
Its a sturdy frame with bath under the change mat, it has storage underneath it.
Target are selling the same ones in a cream colour for $199.
Before I got pregnant I thought I could do it on the floor or bed but Im over weight at the moment so I dont think it would be as possible as I thought. Also not possible if I have c/s.
I have a large ikea chest of drawers with a mat on the top, with some of that sticky, non-slide mat (from bunnings) underneath so it's safer. I also have room on the top for my basket of nappies and my wipes box, and I have 2 soft baskets hanging from the wall with cloth wipes and creams etc above it. This works for me! It's a perfect set up but when I don't have to change nappies I'll just take the mat off and it's a chest of drawers! It's funny though, my friend has a changing table and I'm incapable of changing him facing me longways... I have to stand side on with head on the left cos that's how I do it at home
We have a change table in the bedroom, and a spare foam change mat in the loungeroom (under the couch). We useed the change table heaps when DD was little, but the mat gets used more now. Mum was looking after DD the other day and she used the change table and it would have been too hard for her to change DD on the floor or a bed. So, also think about who else might be caring for your little one when deciding what you need.
Our change table has a bath under neath it too, but we never used the bath in the frame. Would have been a pain to move it in and out of the bathroom each time cos there wasn't enough room for it to stay.
For our first child we just used a converted desk... too low. For our 2nd and 3rd we used a very sturdy second hand purpose built change table. Loved it. Used it all the time for both children. I liked how it was on caster rollers so that i could move it easily to vacuum around. It was the perfect height. We found that our children used to roll around too much on the floor/beds which made holidays and visits to friends tricky. Our babies never seemed to actually stay on those little plastic mats that came with nappy change bags... those mats are a waste of money unless you are on a contained table space. We plan to eventually use the change table to store art supplies on or something similar.
I used one with DS but it broke not long after having DD and we didn't replace it.
If I have another bub I would more than likely buy one as long as we had the room for it (as in 4brd house, here the bub would be in with us so I wouldn't bother)
I was debating getting another one (DF left ours outside in the rain ) but I ended up finding a wooden one in an op shop for $15 and it was what I was looking for so bought it. It has the plastic mat on the top inside and the space underneath for everything else and it is on castors for ease of movement. If I have to have another c/s then this will be so easy to change new DD on as I have placed it at the end of her bassinette so I can pick her up, change her, sit in the glider to feed and then put her back to bed. Procession line I love it
I have a massage table with the change table foam insert thingo on top of the table. That is from BigW, not sure how much but under $20 I'd say. The massage table is great as 1) we use it for massaging eachother... or dh massages me on it 2) it's a change table 3) it's a large area to have his clothes laid out and the nappy bag thrown on there and I use the space for whatever I'm doing in there like folding washing etc 4) I use it as my ironing table too, i have towels under a single sheet on the massage table to protect it from the heat of the iron. It's also great as the height is adjustable. All in all it's great so if you need draws than why not get them with the change table already ontop or you could just buy the insert thingo like what we have
I had one for each child. With my last I lashed out and brought one that goes over the main bath in the house boggle little bear and you would find it best thing I ever did in regards to baby bath and change table, my middle child still fitted it at 5 and I didn't have to bend.
The change table we had, was one that was a cupboard style one with a change mat on top. It had a door on one side & drawers on the other. I found it such value for money as it was used as a piece of furniture afterwards too. I also found it so handy having the doors & drawers because it wasn't an open-shelf style one where Bubs can pull all the nappies, wipes, cotton balls, creams, lotions, etc... all over the place when they are crawling/toddling, you know?
