Electronic Breast Pumps - Any suggestions

The Avent Isis IQ gets consistently the best reviews in online product review sites. I have bought one but not used it yet. My sister loves hers.

Two things to note about it:
- A new model of the isis iq has just been released, it's got a new name - now called Avent Single Electronic Breast Pump and is now BPA Free.
- You can get excellent prices on ebay! Just make sure it is an established australian seller with heaps of positive feebdack and the latest stock (if you want it bPA free like mine). Just got mine for $169.95 with free delivery. It is currently selling for $250 at baby stores and Kmart.

AliB - I got mine of Okmart for the $155.85 with free postage and it is BPA free.. They sell all the latest Avent products on there BPA free. I got my bottles off there BPA free at the same time. Cheapest place I found them. Just so you know Janni Avent products which are BPA free should have a golden honey colour to them.

Janni - yep, it's super easy to clean, you don't have to wash the tubing or anything. You can only sterilise by boiling but I just used to do that once a day, and haven't bothered since about 4 mths.
Mine would still be under warranty, but I don't have any proof of purchase - in fact I can't even recall the name of the seller or their store Ebay only keeps transaction details for 6 mths, so can't help. My own silly fault, who buys something like that & doesn't keep proof of purchase
Anyway it's still working well, just that sometimes when I switch it off it doesn't go off immediately, and it has a variable suction dial but it takes a bit of fiddling these days to get the suction right - it's not as responsive as it once was.

The variable suction is a good feature, also variable speed, so you can start out with quick, gentle suction and then get longer & harder - the idea is it's similar to a baby's sucking. And there are loads of accessories too, I have the car adaptor which is great - it does take batteries but it's like, 6 D cell batteries - I figured $30 for a car adaptor was much more economical

I have the medela and LOVE it.. but if i need one this time around I will hire one from the chemist.. There's have so much more power.

Yes, BPA is a chemical that is found mostly in hard plastics. A lot of baby product manufacturers are removing it from their products these days. The Ameda is BPA free too

I hired a madela pump, same as the ones in hossy only smaller, it was fantastic, am going to hire it again next time

I'm not sure how you're all going with getting a pump. But I can recommend the Medela Swing. I absolutely love it. When I got mine I got a free little black bag and a cooler bag with ice block. We have just been away and driven 5,000km in a short period of time. I loved the fact that it takes batteries as well as being able to be plugged into a power point. When we were driving along the road I would pump and then I would drive and DH would sit in the back with DD and feed her the bottle. Batteries lasted a longtime.

Sorry girls, what does BPA mean - you're saying BPA free. Is it some form of chemical that used to be in the bottles that they've now removed?

Thanks socks ahh ok i now realise that the okmart listing had a photo of the old box but a statement that it is actually new stock. Doh I could have saved another $15!

Hi, do you mind if I Hijack this thread?
I have a Tommee Tippee manual pump which has been working ok for me as I only need to pump once every 2 weeks to relieve pressure when DS has a day when he drinks less.
However, I am now considering pumping to donate for another woman who cannot produce enough milk for her baby. I don't know for how long but it might be a few months. I might need to pump twice a day and am wondering whether an electric pump might be worth it? I'm not planning on any further children, so the pump will only really be used for the other woman and then occasionally for myself (planning to BF DS til at least 2 years).
If you think it might be worth the money, which pump would you reccommend to me?

What a wonderful thing to do!

I would see how you go with the Tommee Tippee first. My sister had this pump & she was EE for a few weeks, she did fine with the manual pump, she found it quite efficient. If you are pumping twice a day you might find it's fine for you.
If an electric pump seems better, I can only speak of the Ameda Purely Yours - it's the only one I have any experience with. I won't repeat my previous posts but I am very happy with it.

I have the Medela Swing. It is designed for full time use and very easy to use. It is also much quieter than many electric pumps. When I was shopping for breast pumps I looked for those endorsed by the ABA because they mimic baby's suck the best. I also have had a manual Avent and I could not get a let down at all. The Medela Swing is compact and comes with a carry bag for discretion. I cant rave about it enough. It's not cheap but it is worth every cent.

Jas, you are of course right and I took your advice and refrained from going on a spending spree. Unfortunately, this morning the handle of my TT pump broke off, so it doesn't work anymore. I'm bummed as I haven't used it all that much and it still broke. But on the other side, it gave me a reason to go out and get an electric one.

Alioops, you made me want a Medela Swing. And I almost did. But when I was at the shops, I managed to stop myself and got the mini-electric instead.

Will let you know once I've used it a while whether I like it or not. I've had the Manual Medela whenn DD was first born and it worked ok. But I didn't like that you had to hold the shield with one hand and use the other to pump. But, at least it wasn't as hard on my hands as the squeezing is with the triggers of the other manual pumps.
