Hi Ladies,

I just received a 1 tog 18-36 month growbag as a prezzie from work. I didn't know a lot about grobags/sleep bags but knew that they were pricey! I'm due in a few weeks so she'll be a winter bub so it will be a long while before I can use this one, however just wondering what some of you experienced mums have done with sleeping bags?

My first thoughts were that I couldn't imagine a 3 year old still in a sleeping bag...but am I wrong? I was given the receipt so I could take it back if I wanted to, so once I found out that it was $90 i really didn't want it to go to waste! Also, I checked the receipt and they only do exchanges within 14 days of purchase which has already passed but it may be worth a go to see if they'll bend the rules...

In general I was thinking that the 0-6 months might be a waste of money as I'm assuming they'll still be swaddled/wrapped for most of that time..? So is the 6-18 months worth it? And are such light weight ones necessary?

What do you ladies think? Is it a worthwhile thing to hang onto for the future?

My girls were both in grobags right from the start. If they were in bed with me, then I didn't bother to wrap them as well but if I managed to get them sleeping in the cradle for a while then I used a muslin wrap over the grobag to just lightly wrap their arms. It was so much easier than blankets, and kept them nice and warm during night feeds.

I stopped using them as soon as the girls were trying to stand up in their cots. Your grobag should have little studs under the arms to make it a big tighter? I'm sure you will still get a lot of use out of it if they won't let you swap it for a smaller one.

My 2.5 year old ds is still in a grobag. He is a really restless sleeper, so they were a life saver for us. He started in one at 6 weeks and has slept in a heavy or light one ever since (summer/winter). Now that he is old enough to pull his blankets up, we prob wont use one this summer, but there is no way we will stop using one while it is this cold.
Definatly keep it, in the unlikely event you dont use it, the resale on them is huge, so dont take the tags off or wash it until you know for sure.

my DS was in a grobag from about 10 or 11 weeks i think. they were fantastic for us - he never liked being wrapped so they were really handy. then as he got older & moved around more in his sleep, they stopped him from getting cold/losing his blankets etc. for 6-18 months we had a 1.0 tog & a 2.5 tog grobag to cover different weather. i thought the 6-18 months were great value because it lasted him for a year. he doesn't use one now (has just turned 2) & i actually can't remember when we stopped - probably once he grew out of the 6-18 months ones! we could have kept going & i know alot of people do, but we just stopped.

i agree with livingthedream - it's def worth keeping it to see what happens. if there's one thing i've learnt, it's that babies are completely unpredictable! and the resale value is pretty good.

DS1 was in a grobag from 9 weeks until age 2 as would take them off, DS2 was in from 9 months until 15 months when would undo.

I have some grobags and some dreambags.

They are great loved them.

Hmmmm, interesting thread considering in amongst all the stuff SIL gave us from her littlies were 2 x 2.5 tog grobags for 0-6 month olds. I understand these are apparently "winter" weight, but are they super warm for the depths of winter kind of warm or would they be suitable for late spring kind of chilly nights?

Penguin is due in November, so will most likely be getting a little big by the time it gets cold again after he's born...

CK, did she give you a little room thermometer with them? Gro put a thermometer in with them, complete with a clothing guide, so you can see based on what temp your room where baby sleeps is, combined with the tog you are using, what sort of clothes to dress bubs with.

Fwiw I only ever had a 2.5 tog in 0-6mth size. And I had a feb bub and a July bub.

i used 0-6 month 2.5 tog bags for my girls (both May babies( through Perth winters and they were fine. You can layer a bit to get xtra warmth - long sleeve body suit under a long all in one etc.

Problem is not so much worrying about him not being warm enough - more about cooking the poor kid in a Perth summer

DS was a summer baby so was mostly in a singlet and swaddled in muslin wraps when he was NB. We got him a grobag when winter hit (i think it was only a 1.5 tog as we have a wood fire so it was still quite warm in our house so this one suited the temp for us the best) which was great during winter. But it only lasted that one winter. When winter came around this year he hated it

I had grobags (and other sleeping bags) when we stopped swaddling DS. But I preferred the sleeping bags for the colder weather because they have arms. Never quite understood the winter bag without arms. But I definitely swear by sleeping bags, regardless of brand! We had a 6-18 month 1 tog, which was perfect through Jan/Feb in Melbourne. The temp thing and clothing guide were very helpful too. DS is now nearly 2 and still in the sleeping bags - he stands up in them, but only ever unzips a little bit.

It's not inside the bag itself - it's a little cardboard thing!

Hi hon. I'm another huge GroBag fan. DD has been in them since 10 weeks and is still going strong at 22 months. She's currently in the 18-36 mths size and although I'd be happy to keep her in them until she's 3, we'll probably try her with normal bedding next summer so it won't matter if she wriggles out of the covers as it will be warm. It'll make the transition a lot easier than trying to do it in winter, ITMS.

We are in Perth and I have two bags in each size for DD so 0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 TOG. We are using the 2.5 togs now with her heater on in her room all night (set to between 18-20 degrees). She wears the 1.0 togs in the inbetween weather then her 0.5 togs in summer and with the aircon on during those stinking hot Perth days and nights.

The clothing guide is awesome. We also have the GroEgg which is the nursery thermometer so we know exactly which bag to use and roughly what clothing to put DD in. They are so easy to use. One of my favourite baby items

I loved the grobags. DS wore them until he came out of his cot at about 2.5 years. He could stand in them no problem. When it was really cold I'd put a blanket as well. I think they recommend you use them after buns is 6 weeks old. Not sure if this is still true. We had DS in a bassinet so no need for them then.
