New Born sizing... confused.. what size was your newborn?

Ok, so I'm only 7.5 weeks along, but I'd like to start buying clothes etc each month so I'm not hit with a huge expense when the baby is about due.

But the sizing confuses me. How big is a new born usually (i know there will be huge variations, but on AVERAGE)? 0000 seems so TINY!! DH thinks 000 is too big (he can't imagine 'something that size coming out of your you know what'...

So what size were your newborns?

    My first was 9lb 4oz (I think that's 4.2kg), and didn't really fit 0000. My second was 7lb 9oz (I think that's 3.5kg?), and he was 0000 for awhile.

My advice is this: get lots of 000's, because remember a baby will be all wrapped up anyway, so it doesn't matter if the clothes are a little big, and they grow so fast in the early days. And if bub is small, they'll fit eventually. Buy a few 0000 clothes, and then if bub turns out to be 0000, you can send dh/friend/family to the shops for more.

Something to keep in mind is that Bonds tend to size a little small (I think that's still the case?) so a bonds 000 is kind of inbetween a 0000 and 000 in my opinion.

Mine have all been about 7.5kg and were in 0000 bonds suits for a couple of weeks. Annoyingly the 000 ones were too big and they would lose their arms and legs in them.
You could get a few of both 0000 and 000 for the hospital to be on the safe side and send someone out for more once bub is born

Wow Raven, 7.5kg, what big babies! (I'm guessing you mean 7lb 5oz? )

My boys were (DS1) 3.75kg and (DS2) 4.03kg and both started out in 0000's, but didn't last very long in them. Like Raven said, 000's were just too big at the start. So I would only buy a few 0000's. And like Nelle said, the Bonds wondersuits are usually a size smaller than what is on the label, so their 000's would be perfect for a newborn

mmmmm yes, Raven, think you have brought new meaning to "tearing a new one" PML...

Back on track, Bella was 6lb and she wore 00000 - 000000's and she did wear them for a quick a while.. It's kind of hard to know what size bub your going to have so I'd opt for just a few things in 0000 and 000's until the baby is born.

    Hi Maree,
My DS was a bit smaller than the ladies above. He was 6 pound 1ounce, ok 3.1kgs. He was born at term but was just nice and little.

He fitted into 00000 (5, 0's) for a couple of weeks and then 4x0's for about a month.

My advice... buy a few of everything... we did and what we didn't use, makes great presents when friends have kids.

If you're not going cloth nappies (we use disposables) then I would advise focusing on buying a pack of them every fortnight, also wipes and baby wash. These are the things that are more costly than the clothes and although they don't look as cute as little suits in bubby's room. You will thank yourself for doing it when the little one comes!

my little fella was 8lb 9oz and the 0000 were just a bit tight, 000 were also a bit loose but i think (imop) that a bit loose is better than a bit tight
