most matress in portacots are terrible & hard. I found it to be more of a prob when DS could move around, as that's when he noticed it more & it was kind of noisy. We got the egg shell foam from clark rubber, cut it to size & then use a fitted sheet to keep it down firm. DS loved it sooooo much we actually did the same in his cot, for winter it kept him so cosy & he slept much better.
Otherwise you can actually buy a special padded sheet designed for the cost themselves, they have them online....you should be able to google it. HTH.
They are horrible but prob not much different to pram basinettes which babies seem to be able to fall asleep in. We never had a problem with our DD falling alseep in hers - I even put it in upside down one day so it was REALLY hard! Ooops!
