Didnt have any chair in nursery as I fed in lounge room on couch. As I would watch tv while feeding as he was a long slow feeder.
There is a sofa bed in DS room but really there as a spare bed!
Hi All
I'm currently in the process of planning the nursery for our first DD. So far we have decided on the cot, change table/chest of drawers and book shelf.
The only thing I am not sure of is whether we need a rocker/chair in the there??? Can you please share with me if you have or havent got one, if you have one how long you used it for or what you did instead of a chair in the nursery. I would ideally like to hear the good, the bad and the ugly!
Many thanks in advance![]()

We have one in the nursery and i love it and use it heaps. When i got home from the hospital we had it in the lounge room as it was the only chair i could get in and out of comfortably. Now i use it for night feeds, rocking to sleep, reading stories and during the day if i want ds to settle during a feed or before a sleep. Its one of the best things i bought for the nursery. Its especially good for rocking ds to sleep, its literally the only place where i can sit and put ds to sleep in my arms.
We have a rocker in the nursery and I love it too. Its great for night feeds, rocking to sleep in the middle of the night etc. Sometimes I use it for day feeds too if DS is too distracted in the lounge. Eventually we will probably use it for bed-time stories, and once its not needed in the nursery I will whip it into the lounge because its SO COMFY!!
I got mine off ebay for a really good price, great condition.
I have a rocker. Was bought with the intention of putting it in Darcy's nursery. Never got there. I needed the TV to try and keep awake for middle of the night feeds. Plus my babies are looong babies and I actually find the armrests a hindrance.
Reminds me to put it on ebay actaully
We haven't had a chair in either nursery and never even really needed one. Depends what you want it in there for I guess. I'm happy to sit on the floor to read, and like I said would prefer to feed where I can also be sociable.
we have a rocker that we have out in the lounge - similar reasons to feeb. if DD is really struggling to settle, we feed laying down in bed. in all honesty, daddy settles her in the rocker more than i do!
i looked at putting it in her bedroom but figured i would rarely sit in there as she tends to take ages to feed and i want her to be used to noise. we tend to feed anywhere and everywhere. yesterday it was outside... i do love the rocker for when she's really grizzly - not so much for her, for me though lol
We have a rocker in DD's room and i LOVE it, we used it in the lounge a bit when she was younger and was in a bassinet in our room as night feeds i did in bed but as soon as she went into her room so did the rocker, night feeds in there (nice low lit room), also great for once they get to teething stages, can settle them in their own room and your still comfy.
We also do a book in there sometimes before bed (even though she's only little) and she loves it.
If you don't have a rocker it doesn't matter, sometimes a nice high backed comfy chair is just as good, you may find you don't even use it but i wouldn't be without mine... LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
Well didn't have one with DS1 and that was fine and have one with ds2 and think its great i must admit that we don't use it all the time but do use it a decent amount and I am glad we have it there...I think with Baby products there are certain things that some ppl love and others see as useless. Like change tables I for one wouldn't be without one and use it all the time others buy one and then never use it and think its a waste of space!
I think you just have to kinda guess what u will use sometimes and one recommendation I could make is buy a chair that is multi functional we have a chair thats the poang ikea one so if we didnt end uo using it could go in the lounge room etc and after we have finished using it in the nursery we could always move it there, Plus it was easy to move into our bedroom when Spence was sleeping in there in his bassinette.
Thanks for the input so far girls. I'm really still in 2 minds about it. Think I might have to have a look over the weekend at the types of chairs available, and maybe even leave it til DD arrives and see if I need/want one.
Does anyone have any rockers/chair recommendations?
I don't have one yet but am looking for a second hand Swallow Papa Glider.
Try ebay hun that way you can get something second hand for a good price in good condition AND if you don't like it or use it you can resell and not be worried about losing too much $$

I found a really cool chair from Ikea called Poang. We bought 3 of them as we were updating our lounge furniture. I have one in the nursery, and 2 in the lounge. Everyone loves sitting in them. Best of all, they arent a 'breastfeeding chair and are quite funky, light, easy to move and come in a range of colours and fabrics.
They rock slightly - or bounce, but arent totally upright, slightly reclined but I used to pop a pillow behind my back in the early BF days for correct posture and positioning.
We have the Babyhood Sovereign Glider Chair. It was about $500 but it's leather and fits in well with our modern house. It's SUPER comfy and I'm already fighting DH for it who thinks it makes a very comfy beer chair!
The glider is currently in the nursery but we will move it into the lounge when we get home from hossi and we'll put one of our armchairs and a foot rest in the nursery instead so I still have a comfy chair in the nursery if I need it. I figure I'll be doing the majority of feeding and settling in the lounge though.
I used my rocking chair a lot when my children were babies and still use it occasionally as it's so comfy.
I have a king glider with a matching gliding footstool. We had it in our bedroom instead of the nursery because it fitted better (our bedroom was larger), plus it was a nice place to sit and talk to DH when he was in bed too at the end of the day... plus it suited the decor in there better LOL
HERE is a photo of it.
It cost about $450 new.
The main thing to make sure when you buy a rocking chair (as well as it being comfy) is that it rocks quietly and that the arm rests especially are comfy (most are too hard and narrow). I chose mine because as well as everything else it had a good head rest where I was able to doze in a comfy position.
I didn't have a rocking chair with my DD and ended up dragging the office chair into DD's room for night feeds, rocking on that and not doing it much good. Next time I'll definitely buy a rocking chair.
We got one when DS was around 6months old & it's been priceless for us! I guess you could wait til bubs is born & decide what works for you & then see if you want one. They have so many uses than just feeds but each bubs is an individual so you may not get as much use out of it for whateve reason.
DS was a heavy baby & would not settle well at night first up so we got it as we were sitting in his room on a kitchen chair feeding & that was not comfy at all. We got it so I could rock him in comfort etc & do night time feeds as once he got more alert it really wans't practical to go into the lounge & let him fully wake up. For us it's been great, DS didn't sleep through the night til after 2yrs of age!!!!! so we've been feeding during the night using the rocker for a long time. He also was very sick for most of last year & it was again priceless with all the wake ups & un-settled nights. When then moved it to the office & up until yesterday were using it at the office desk..very comfy.
We moved it out when he went into a bed as it took up too much room, but we still got a rocker type more funky chair from IKEA that is still in his room as he still needs cuddles & quiet time etc.
we had a chair in the nursery and used it all the time. it had a recline so that i could still keep in sleepy mode for the early am feeds.
next time around i am splashing out and getting a 'womb chair'. the cost a bomb, but i really really loved using my chair last time (only thing was that it didnt have comfy arm rests and this was an issue for long feeds) and have decided that because i spent so much time in it, i deserve a comfy piece of furniture (and also, i wanted to use it in other parts of the house once it stopped being used for feeds).
another idea is what my friend is doing and getting a day bed from Ikea (the wooden one that converts to a double bed). this also looks really great as then you can lie beside bubs and snooze while they feed (or at least rest a bit more comfy).
After suffering without rockers or even nice armchairs with DD1, I went all out with DD2 and lashed out on a lovely cream-leather rocking-recliner lay-z-boy.
It's quite compact, we only had a tiny corner in our bedroom to fit it in when we bought it, but it was an absolute godsend. So comfy and supportive, it was the only place I could get comfy at the end of my pregnancy. Love it to bits, it's now my chair in the loungeroom, it has been wonderful. It's my favorite thing that I own.
ETA - clare what's a Womb chair???
