I've been using OPKs for four cycles now and always get a line on CD16. The lines aren't very dark though but because they always appear at the same time of the month I've been taking them as positive even though they're supposed to be darker than the control line. BUT, this month, I didn't get much of a line at all on CD16, then tested again today (CD20) and got an immediate very strong line.
I don't think I've tested this time of the month before so maybe I would have got the dark line on CD20 the other months too? Or can the day I ovulate change each month? I didn't think so...
I don't use OPK's, but I do temp and yes you ceratinly can ovulate on a different day from month to month, I usually O on CD28 but this month threw me and I o'd on CD26, it is said that your LP stays the same though, although mine has been known to change (maybe I am just weird!)
Just remember with the OPK's that the line has to be the same as or darker than the control line, they are not like a pregnancy test where a line is a line, fient lines do not count on OPK's.
Have you ever tried temping? For me it is very acurate and it doesn't cost anything the only 'problem' is that you can only see once you have ovulated, but the good thing is it makes you pay attention to your body and get to know what is normal, then like me, you end up getting a feel for you temps and when o is coming also with subtle changes in your body like increased CM and slight overy 'pain'.
I recommend doing some reading about fertility, maybe joining Fertility Friend which has a good online course. Or there's a number of articles here: https://www.bellybelly.com.au/conception
I too second everything Daintree Dream has said. I never used OPKs but did temping and found it worked for me. There were quite a few in my TTC group who used OPKs, and the general consensus was consistency. Ie start using them on say day 14 (or 16 if you like) and keep using them every day until the line gets darker than the control line. If you've only been testing on day 16 and not on any days after, chances are you've actually been O'ing closer to day 20 anyway. Hope that makes sense!
Agree with the other girls.
I O generally on CD14. My cycles are generally 28-29days. However, every now and then my cycles are longer and my O date is a couple of days later. I temp and use OPK's.
OPK's are only Positive if the test line is as dark as, or darker then, the control line. It is possible to get lines at any point in your cycle, it is only the really dark ones that count.
Mine changes month to month, between 16 and 18. I find a combo of temping and OPKs has helped pin it down, though other signs can too - I get pain a couple of days beforehand.
I think if you have a 'window' of a few days where you know you're going to be fertile, and BD like crazy, you should be a-ok.
Thanks for your advice ladies
I did a fair bit of reading when I was TTC DS but was charting temps last time and didn't use OPKs. I thought I knew a lot but it seems there's always more to learn!! Especially when things change.
Anyway, DH and I must have BD at the right time because this morning I got a BFP!!
It's early so fingers crossed it sticks! YAY!
