OPK time of day?

Hi,
Just a quick question regarding the time of day you should test using opk's. I have read several times on this site that 2pm is the best time. However I have been using seretec lh tests (provided by Fertility specialist) and she said it is best to use fmu as the highest surge is about 5am?
Are all tests different, anyone else been given this advice?

I heard the exact opposite advice, that LH is produced while you are awake. Infact I have never heard anyone advising to test with FMU!

Most sites say the best time to test is 2pm, I always tested between 4 and 5 pm and got good results.

Ive never heard of 5am doing an OPK test before.....

OPKs measure LH in your urine.....and LH is not apparent in your urine till later in the day - thats why they say after 2pm. Ive had a +ve at 8pm though, and i have read not to test after 10pm, as levels drop......

I've also read that 2pm is the best time but I would tend to listen to your FS on the time that she recommends. It's going to be annoying getting up at 5am to wee each morning. Totally worth it though.
This could explain why I never ever got a positive OPK even the month that I conceived DD.

Yeah I thought it was a little strange as it goes against everything I had heard. Having said that I have been using the opks for the last 2 cycles and haven't got a positive, mind you the fs thinks that is because I haven't ovulated!!!
I might ask her about it again next time I see her!

I've been researching and I take back my first post. Every single website says not to test with the FMU. Some suggest testing twice a day at 12noon and 8pm to have a better chance at catching the surge. They say just to try and test the same time each day and mostly say 2pm.

It's really confusing isn't it...

Having many long years of using them it took me a loooooong time to get it right. FS will recommend testing with fmu. The reason some companies suggest you don't is that we all have LH in our wee - even men! If you use FMU you are more likely to get a false positive - that is why companies suggest that you don't use FMU. (because FMU is usually more concentrated)

Having said all of that - I got positives with fmu that were the LH surge - and I needed to test often - I would get an almost positive at 8pm and (embarassed to admit) I would test at around 2am and almost positive - then a positive with FMU - then at 2pm I was back to two lines but not a positive. So, had I tested only at 2pm I would never have got a positive!

MY specialist also suggested using FMU - I was on clomid with trigger shots and used OPK"s for this as well and on the packaging it said FMU.

I know peeonastick the website says to test at 2pm - for me that didn't work. I needed to test frequently and sometimes I got a positive late in the evening - but mostly it was early morning,...

i have heard also 2pm. If you dont seem to get a positive opk, or a weak 2nd line, then, test twice a day, at 2pm, and again at 8pm. Some people have a short LH surge, or, a short surge. thats what i read on lullaby conceptions. dont wee for 2hours before the test, and keep liquid intake to a minimum.

Seems I have started some discussion here!
I am on clomid and as I said have been advised to use fmu by fs.
I will definitely ask her next time and will get back to you all about what she says as I sure she will have a reason for telling me that! When conceiving my dd I always tested late afternoon but never really had convincing results anyway! Maybe I am just one of those people that they don't work for!

I was the same - it took me a long time to get a true positive - and it was only with FMU or overnight urine. I even testd for a whole cycle once - I only tested positive when I was surging. Good luck!

just want to add a quick question- how long does the surge last? ie if there is a positive test one day, will it only be positive that one day in the cycle?
I ask because I have been using OPKs this month, and I was at my mum's place and left the tests at home...so I missed two days...all the days before that were negative..DH and I DTD just in case on one of those days I didn't test in between, then last night when home I did a test and got a positive...so I assume that is my surge? I just wondered had I tested the day before, if it would have been positive too. I suppose every woman's surge time differs.

In the past, I've used them, and stopped once I saw the surge, so I wouldn't know if there still would've been a positive test the next day. Since then, I've been going through IVF...so the need for OPKs has gone...but we are trying naturally this month and next, before we resume IVF.

Hi,
Don't quote me but I think that the positive opk indicates that you are having a surge and will ovulate within the next 36 hours that's why they say that you should stop testing after you get a positive. I think it stays positive for a few days and then fades- hope that helps but am not entirely sure!
