    The "first wooden railway" Thomas set is the big one. But be careful - if you buy the really cheap stuff, only tiny engines fit under the bridges anyway. The unbranded stuff is usually OK with the Thomas wooden stuff.

    But DS plays with the metal take-along trains on the wooden railway and doesn't care that the rails are too wide for the trains. Just me that doesn't like it.

    we got DS a set that came with a little diecast thomas that fits ok?? or is there another metal set again? it's a battery operated one...

    I love the thomas train sets... they're just such a timeless toy.

    The die-cast take-along ones are the ones with "smart magnets" in and are a smaller gauge - they don't have batteries.

    DS has a battery operated set at my parents' house that fits on his wooden stuff OK.
