    Encouraging self settling

I am wanting to teach DS2 how to self settle himself in his cot in the next month or so....Its hard to settle him now with DS1 around cause he is so loud and bursts into the room.

At the moment DS2 spends his day in the swing/bouncer/playmat and doesn't really sleep an aweful much.

Sounds like you need to tell young Rhys more about settling that little Harrison. It would be easier to explain to Rhys that when you are trying to put his brother to sleep he needs to be more quiet and/or not come into the room. I know I'm saying that and I have NOOOOO idea!

Maybe you can play some nice music for Harrison dull out the Rhys noise?

    Sorry....I don't think I'm much help here!!

Okay...firstly, with your older son, he;s about the same age as my DD#3.....and she is the loudest, and proving to be the most difficult when it comes to putting #4 to sleep....she's just that bit too young to get 'be quiet please, baby is sleeping, means the baby is freakin sleepin!!!!
I put Dora on when DS is haivng his nap - for the first 10-20mins of the nap anyway. ITs her treat - she looooves Dora, so i know she will be quiet. Or...today, i sent her out on the decking with her new bubble machine......that kept her quiet. Why not put a few of your DS fav toys away...when its time for baby to nap - pull these toys out, so its a real novelty...hopefully he will be immersed in the new play equipment, and not wake the sleeping baby..

I also found putting the radio on in babys room helped.... i know, some people woudl disagree, but found it muffled out the screeching toddler lurking around....the mobile thingy is good too - but find the lullaby doesnt play for that long on most models. Although was at a girlfriends place last week and her lullaby thingy went for 20 mins or so.... worth looking into - GL !!!!

Ohhhhh I wish DS1 was a TV kid but he isnt......The toy idea is good tho. Would the radio interfere with my angelcare monitor??

It's hard with the older sibling isn't it? I make sure the boys are occupied (with an activity, toys or TV) before putting DD down, then I put a CD on in her room and put the fan on so it makes a bit more white noise. This seems to help drown out her brother's noise!

I don't think the radio would interfere with your Angelcare monitor as it doesn't cause vibrations. You will probably here it through your unit though

My DD doesn't sleep alot during the day either..I sometime put her under the play gym and she just drifts off, I leave her there as it sometimes easier than transferring. Same with the bouncer.

I have heard you can buy a CD of just white noise..apparently white noise is good to help babies settle.

    Good luck
