My girl co-sleeps with us. She'll go to the toilet before bed and if it's not too cold in the morning she'll go out during the day. There are some mornings she won't get out of bed cause it's too cold. Those days I feel like my Mother when she would try to get me out of bed for school
I never had a dog whilst growing up and when I started seeing DP his dog co-slept with him when I came on the scene it was a hard transition for her having to share the bed with me... There were a few nights when she would push me to the bed frame so she would have all the room.
This may seem unconventional for some, but for us the girls are our children. However, we are aware that they are doggies and implement Casear Millians principles into our lifestyle, obedience before affection and all of that
My big dog used to sleep inside until I was pregnant and DP transitioned him to outside and built him a kennel. He'd still spend lots of time inside until we got the second dog, the little one, then they both went outside for most of the time (and shared the kennel, very cute!!). When big dog was a puppy we would leave paper out for him to pee on in case I missed his calls for needing to wee. I house trained him in about 3 weeks cos I was home all the time at the time and didn't have kids to distract me. It will pass. Housetraining a puppy takes less time than toilet training a toddler, so take heart!
Now that we're at MiL's we're keeping the little one inside at night and whenever she wants in the day, because she's got a high pitched bark and she's quiet if she's inside.
I had a pomx sheltie that I loved to sleep with when I was single. He would snuggle right up to me and if I moved he moved with me. DP couldn't stand it, and once, when the dog came with me to DP's house in the early days, DP put him into the back room. My beautifully house-trained dog very quickly taught DP what he thought of being separated at night... Poo everywhere!! That dog and I had a rapport that I don't think can ever be replicated. He was killed by a car only weeks before I found out I was pg.
ohh nope...we'd never get any sleep because he'd be bouncing arouund the house all night! Lol
He doesn't have a kennel anymore, we got rid of it when we moved because he never used it. he used to when it had a dog bed inside it, but of course he had to keep dragging that outside and tear it apart
now he sleeps underneath the house, if it's raining we usually open the laundry door for him so he can get out of the rain.
Pippy-dog sleeps outside here, too We had her inside full-time as a pup but it was just too messy... no matter what we tried, she wouldn't/couldn't be toilet-trained and it was just too much for me (being heavily pregnant and chasing a toddler) to clean up the endless puddles and poos every day. DH got fed up and put her outside, he and my dad built a little kennel for her that sits on the front verandah so she has somewhere warm to sleep on cold/wet nights (there's a big doona in there for her to snuggle) but some really cold nights I let her into the laundry as it's babygated off from the rest of the house and the floor is concrete so easily cleaned up the next morning.
My girls sleep inside as well, we have two dog beds on the ground next to our bed and they sleep there. Sometimes they wiggle their way up onto our bed, but they are big dogs and have both been crate trained so most of the time they are well behaved and stay on their beds.
We take them out for a walk at around 10.30 or right before bed, and again first thing in the morning. Both my girls are older, 6yrs and 12 years and are well into the habit of bedtime. We know that if something happens, there is a reason for it. They spend most of the day outside, and come inside whenever we are home. Our old girl wears a coat at night in winter and comes with me to work when I go at night to the vet hospital, and our younger dog has been trained to sleep with our DD1 when we have a bad night with her. So she leans on my DD's legs to help her sleep.... its a sensory thing that we have used the dog to help.
our dog sleeps inside. we got her as a young pup so went through the toilet training thang...outside on a lead after dinner (hers) and just before bed time and would go on repeat 'do a wee' and when we saw her squat down to wee/poo we would say: 'do wee/do poos'. that way she learnt the association. we also had a section of the kitchen area (which was gated off from the rest of house) that had newspapers down in case of 'accidents'.
it took a bit of time, but she got there and now can wait aaagggess before needing to be let out for a wee in the morning.
i guess with the dog only being new to your house it will take some time, and being *slightly* older it may take a bit more for him to twig what the deal is. in your situation i would cut down on the night wees to just the one after dinner, and then again at bedtime. use heaps of positive reinforcement when he wees outside and then back in. create a little area for accidents...they tend to understand it pretty well, give or take of course, and then wake up quite early and let him out for a wee in the morning. eventually you will find that he builds up his ability to 'hold on' as he has the structure and routine to go by.
yahtzee used to co-sleep with us until we got pg, now she sleeps in her basket in our room (much to her disgust).
shes 4 now and grew out of having to pee during the night at about 2.
she also pees when we say "do a wee" but 1/2 the time its too cold or wet or something 4 her 2 want to go out before bed and in the morning, i swear she has an iron bladder! she can go an entire trip from adelaide to melbourne with 1 toilet stop!
if u have a doggy door, can u leave the door open so they can go in and out of the doggy door during the night if they need?
but look up cesar milan, he has really good advice and ideas that are really easy to follow and good for the pooch
Millie sleeps int he laundry which is out the back, weperate from our house. The door stays open all day and at night we lock her in there.
When she was younger she slept inside, but she likes to pee on the carpet during the night, however in the laundry she holds on til morning cause theres no carpet in there!
