Hi, I find the easiest way to put gel/cream in cat's eyes is to squeeze a small amount out of the tube and onto my thumb, then facing the cat just hold it's face (with it looking at you) and quickly swipe your thumb across their eye. They are usually a lot more trusting of your thumb coming towards their face than a mean scary tube. Plus you'll probably be more confident that you're not going to hurt the cat by sticking the tube in it's eyeball (especially if it's the little metal tube type!).
Oh, and your aim is to get as much in the eye as possible, rather than just around the rim
We have persians and they always have eye trouble, the best way to do it is pull back the lower lid and drop some onto it and this let the lid close. You can give the lid a little swoosh around but you dont have to.
What ever you do, don't put your finger on pussy's eye you will make it worse.

You could also try wrapping your cat in a large towel in a sitting position iykwim - this always helps me when I have to give tablets etc, which Button just hates and stopsme getting scratched.
We had to give our kitty eye cream not long ago too. We had to put in in his eye, and also on a scratch underneath. He didn't mind the cream going in his eye at all, we held his lid open and just squeezed a bit in, no trouble at all, he blinked as soon as it was done and he was happy. He wriggled when we put it under his eye though so had to hold him a bit tighter.
