I'm a bad doggy owner

I took my dogs to the Vet this arvo for their yearly vaccinations, and in the waiting room noticed (for the first time) a growth on my eldest dogs eyelid (on the under side of the eyelid, if that makes sense).

I got the usual 'you're dogs are overweight' lecture, and I felt really bad about it. I spent so much time losing my excess weight, I've neglected my furry babies . They both could lose a good 10 kilos each. Geez, I suck! They've both been there with me, keeping me company during my single years, then hubby and kids came along and they've both been neglected.

So I paid the $450 for the vaccinations and some 'veggie treats' (probably to help cure my guilt a bit!), then booked my older dog in for the 'mass removal' (they call it) for Friday, costing $605.

After dinner tonight, I took them both for a good walk, and I felt a bit better for it. Spending time with my furry girls is fun!

I feel terrible for neglecting my dogs.....Just thought I'd put that out there. No real reason for the post, other than to just off load...

I think with lifestyles being so busy these days, plus you just had a baby not so long ago, it is easy to neglect certain things & unfortunately it has been your pooches. At least you have taken a step in the right direction - they would have been pooped form their walk!

I am a terrible pet owner too - I had two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that I loved dearly but they shed fur like nothing else. It was okay until we had a baby and we had to banish them to their own area of the house and the backyard because there was just too much hair (even though we vacuumed daily). I felt so bad about neglecting them that I had them rehomed with some old people that would give them all the attention that they ever wanted and deserved. They were not dogs that liked being by themselves and I was so busy/tired/distracted and they did not like being banished to the backyard. Also one of them had a severe running away problem which I usually managed well before babies but after babies, I kept forgetting to make sure he was safe before opening the front door and he would bolt. I couldn't deal with the emotional stress of not knowing if he was okay, and having a baby meant I couldn't always go looking for him immediately when he ran away.

Babies and pets are difficult. I think you are doing a far better job than I was. I'll bet they loved their walk tonight

Sorry but you don't get a bad dog owner award. You love them, you are vaccinating them, getting the lump removed without blinking at the price, and you recognise they now need to lose some weight. Doesn't sound like neglect to me even if they have gotten a bit fat. If only all dog owners were so 'neglectful'.

It was so sad. But in my situation, it was better for my dogs to be with people who could love them and care for them properly. I feel guilty about rehoming them though because I feel like having a dog is a lifelong commitment (at least as long as the dog lives) and I wimped out because I couldn't take proper care of them. They deserved lots of care and attention but they were so sad driving away - they really deserved it from me. I just didn't have the capacity. I tried for a year after we had DD1 but they were just so neglected, I couldn't do it anymore

Aw hun don't feel bad!! When we fell pregnant we moved our inside dog outside. She's a tiny jack\ chuawawa and constantly shakes like a leaf looking inside at us with sad eyes. She makes me feel so guilty!
You do the right things by ur puppies, they're fed, looked after and loved
