my puppy has an owie

So we just came back from the vet for Shelby's 12week checkup/vaccinations. All perfect =) my handsome boy was perfect. very shy, but once he realised she kept giving him treats he was her new best friend.

We just got back, and I was in the kitchen cooking tea, and DH in the lounge and I hear him barking like mad. I look outside to see Balina (our chicken) on the bbq. Think all good he is just barking at her. When he didn't stop (this is the most he has barked) I went out to see him. He came to the door when I opened it and he was limping badly, and even whimpering a little bit when he put weight on in. He was more than happy for us to play with it and feel it and how it moved etc, and it didn't bother him, and it didnt feel broken and moved normal.

We have left him... seeing if it gets better or worse. We think he might have twisted it or something, as he is very uncoordinated in his puppy clumsiness, so could have easily have landing on it funnny.

are we doing the right thing? seeing if it gets better or should we be doing something else? is there any tricks we can do to know?

I dont want to be one of these mothers that rush to the vet/doctor everytime...

Poor Shelby!!!!

I think its ok to leave him, as long as you have looked to see if maybe its a splinter in his foot or something and if he doesnt yelp like mad when you touch it he should be ok. See how he is through the night and if its any worse tomorrow you can run screaming to the vet :-)

Thats what we thought. cause he let us move it around and feel along the bone and everything. if it was broken or something serious he wouldnt let us do that hey. I just went out there to stop him barking again and move Balina on so he could rest and noticed DH's bike on the ground. So it might have fallen on him? =(

i would leave it til tmrw and see if its any better/worse.
check to see if there is a splinter in it. i know my dog limps if he has one.

Poor Shelby. My fur bub has done this a couple of times, last time was when I was bathing DS for the first time by myself, and home alone.
He also allows us to touch it etc and it feels fine. Not sure what sort of pup you have, but I have a little one who gets overly excited and "pulls a muscle" in his back leg. We normally give him a treat that will take him some time to get through, so he can lay day quietly for a while.
Check for burrs as well caught on his foot.

Have you got a 24hour vet close by that you can call? I know we have one who we have called before, and they kind of triaged us over the phone to see if it was something that could wait til the next morning, or if he needed to be taken in straight away.

I'm sure he will be ok, but that doesn't stop you from worrying I know!

Check between his toes, he may have been bitten by something. I think he'll be fine tonight, but yes if it's not any better or even worse get him to the vet.

he is pretty handsome...when we were in the room with the vet, other people were walking past the window pointing him out and smiling at him =)
