I'm very worried about our dog, he has been coughing/wheezing/hacking up white foam all afternoon. I can't take him to the vet myself during the day because I can't manage getting him (he's a kelpie x border collie, etc), the kids and my small car. We've been trying to ring an after hours vet for advice, but we aren't getting anywhere.
He's otherwise happy, not acting lethargic or refusing food and is happy to play. We're not sure if he's eaten something he shouldn't have. The only change in our garden is that DH sprayed Pyrethrum Insecticide on our vegie patch yesterday, but it is meant to be safe according to the packaging.
I thought I'd post on here in case anyone else has had this happen and may be able to help?
Just wanting to let you know that one of my dogs has this problem occasionally. He will kind of do all this (sorrry TMI) hoking (couldnt think of another word) it all back and then vomiting up yellowish bile sort of stuff. Its yuk but he is fine and jsut does this every so often. He is also quite a happy dog also.
Just a quick couple of questions. Has your dog ever done this before? If there is any blood you must take him to emergency vets straight away. Check his poos as well for blood.
Thanks for your replies everyone. DH finally got onto a vet on the phone and they said it could be a viral infection (because of the cough). We will monitor him and see how he is in the morning. He has never been sick before, he's 6 1/2 and we've never had any problems with him before. The vet said we need to pre-warn them if we bring him in because he could be infectious.
I'm so worried, I hope he will be OK. If he's still not good tomorrow I'll have to get DH to take him in.
Ali - Thanks . There has been no blood, not in his poo either thank goodness.
Ali - I'm pretty sure he is up-to-date with his vaccines, I'll have to double check, but we have always had them done when we are meant to.
I have done some Googling and it sounds a lot like Kennel Cough, he has only been in contact with one dog yesterday though so I'm not sure if he could catch it that quickly. Maybe he's just been too cold overnight? DH is out there now putting more warm bedding in his kennel, he has to nail it down though because otherwise he pulls it out and it ends up wet .
The more I read the more I know I will be getting DH to take him to the vet tomorrow. It sounds like he might need some ABs. The poor thing, his cough sounds awful .
