Hi girls,
Long story short, I've been too lazy to get my script for the mini-pill filled, and DD2 is going 6-8 hours overnight without a feed so I know I'm not 'safe' anymore (got AF a couple of weeks ago).
DH and I have been using condoms but last night he got a bit too worked up before putting one on and we had a little accident. He hadn't penetrated, but there was a bit of semen around the opening of my vagina and then he put a condom on and we got on with it, so there's a chance he might have pushed some inside...
Can I use the morning-after pill while breastfeeding? I don't really want to make a doctor's appt to get a prescription for it, only to be told I can't use it because I'm BFing, which is why I'm asking you guys first
Eeeek... I know the chances of anything happening are very slight but I don't want to take the risk - DH and I are adamant about not having any more kids and he's even gone so far as to allow discussion about him getting the snip (he always said I'd be getting my tubes tied but recently has relented and realised it's his turn to go through some pain hehehe), I know it's our own stupid fault for being so careless but I need some advice!!
If I can't use the morning-after pill, is there anything else I can do?
Thanks in advance for your help, ladies
hmm not sure about the MAP and BFing, but since it's only a dose of two tablets.....yeah dunno.
However, you don't have to go to the doc's for a script anymore. You can go straight to the chemist and buy it. So maybe just go and speak to your pharmacist.
Had a similar thing happen to me about 7 weeks ago
The pharmacit said to use any EBM I had first and keep pumping to keep my supply up. He told me to try and avoid bf for 24hrs post the MAP if possible. The MAP can really drop your milk supply so keep pumping and/or feeding often and I also took fenungreek and we didnt have too many problems getting back to bf.
I would speak to your pharmacist as they have better info on bf and medications than a lot of gps's and you dont need a script for it.
(Im still waiting for af after our accident but its been 7 weeks since our accident and have done 2 hpt's with fmu both were bfn's this week I just hate being so irregular with a while I'm bf)
Ah, thanks girls. I didn't know you didn't need a prescription for it anymore, so that's a big help (no having to organise the kids so I can talk to the GP in peace lol). I'm doing the groceries this afternoon so I'll pop into the chemist first and see what they can do for me. Thanks so much!!
From what I understand of the MAP its a strong dose of the common contraception pill and not something else. I found this out when I was given 4 tablets of my old pill one time and told that was the MAP .
I would see someone about it though so either a Pharmacist or a Dr that way you can discuss all your concerns with someone "in the know"
I think your right nanenae and its the progesterone only pill so people are better off seeing a pharmacist i they aren't sure what type of contraceptive pill they are on. Thats why it afects milk supply because it is a whopping does of progesterone
All appears to be sorted I talked to the pharmacist and she said that if bub is sleeping through the night without waking for feeds, to just take both pills at once (instead of spreading them out over 24 hours or whatever it is) after her last feed for the night and then to feed her in the morning, or if I'm *really* concerned, to pump and dump first thing in the morning and then go on as normal.
Thanks so much for your advice, ladies So much easier to find out that I didn't need a script and just go straight to the chemist to get her advice!!
Hmm. Well the instruction leaflet says to stop BFing for 3 days because of it being secreted, but the pharmacist said the 8-hour break overnight was fine??
Gah, *punches DH* it's all his fault lol.
What effect do you reckon this stuff would have on bub if the pharmacist was wrong and I shouldn't be BFing?
hun there is a great guy who worked out of the monash in melbourne who is the guru of medicines and who can take what when it comes to pregnancy or breastfeeding, maybe pm barb glare and grab the number off her
You could also try calling a local womens and childrens hospital, ask to speak to the pharmacy, like a previous poster said, pharmacists tend to be a bit more up to date with how medications will affect you or bub then gps, and the WCHs pharmacists seem to be really on the ball, (well, they are here in adelaide!)
Good luck, fingers crossed it all works out with as little stress involved as possible xxx
