    Pregnant while still fully breastfeeding

    Hi Ladies

I've just found out I'm pg with #2, a bit of a shock since #1 is only 4 months old and still completely breastfed, 6 feeds per day. I didn't even know I was ovulating, and haven't had a cycle since April '08 (half my luck!)
Problem is, I have no idea how to figure out how far along I am. Have booked in to see my ob in a couple of weeks, and she'll do a scan, but I'm not sure I can wait that long. I know it's not far along, as the line on my hpt was pretty faint, and I had an implantation bleed last wednesday. Does anyone know if you can calculate your due date from implantation bleed? I never had one last year, so can't use that as a reference.

Also, does anyone know if the incidence of miscarriage is any higher while breastfeeding? Have had a couple of people tell me I should wean DD onto formula, to give the new pregnancy the best chance of survival, but my maternal health nurse said that was a bunch of hooey! Any advice would be great.

thanks for any help in advance xx

Congratulations Bonniesmum. How exciting if a little unexpected! Falling pg within the first 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding isn't common, but obviously it does happen. Does your little one feed overnight at all? When babies sleep through the night it increases the chances of you falling pg.

It is totally safe to breastfeed through pg, and even beyond. Many people feed a baby and toddler at the same time. Your supply will drop during pg however, so there is a chance your baby might self-wean. And because your baby is still so young you might need to keep an eye on weight gains to make sure she is getting enough.

Best of luck with your pg and I hope you get some answers about dating. I was in the same boat with DS2, I had only had a couple of irregular cycles since DS1 was born as I was also still breastfeeding (although DS1 was 11 months when I fell pg). But as it turned out I got my BFP at around 4 weeks.

    Congratulations!

I was still feeding my 15 month old 3 hourly and through the night when i fell pregnant. I breastfed right through my pregnancy, and both for 6.5 months after. Take a look in the breastfeeding forum if you find you need some support to continue, its definately possible and beneficial for both of you.

    Hi Bonniesmum

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

Just block your ears when people say rediculous things about you bf'ing and it harming your pregnancy!
It's such a special time, just keep doing whatever YOU feel comfortable with!
Your 2 little ones will be so close (not just in age) and share a magical bond.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!!

Definitely a bunch of hooey about stopping BF'ing. Keep going with it I say! DS & I are still BF'ing and I'm about 8.5 weeks along. I don't intend stopping until he does.

    Good luck with everything!
