hey Guys Just wondering if anyone recommends any books they have read recentley or in previous pregnancies that you enjoy. I would like something that will help me with everything that comes along with pregnancy and what to eat and so on. I hear that Up the Duff by Kaz Cook is good has nayone read this? if so what did you think? Your help would be greatly appreciated thanks
Lol Chickbabe, don't be sorry you didn't know! Not your fault.
I read 'Up the Duff', and I really enjoyed it. Didn't agree with absolutely everything she said, but it's so entertaining, and I found the less humorous books difficult to get through. It's definitely worth a read, even just to see how big your bub is week by week and to read someone else whinging about the same stuff you're going through.
I found Up the Duff great for a lighthearted tone, and also had What to expect when you are expecting which i found was ok for a more factual look. I also read Labour of Love by Gabrielle Targett which was fantastic and will be buying BIrth SKills by Juju Sundjin and Sarah Murdoch for number 2!
HtH!
I've bought What to Expect When You Are Expecting and New Active Birth. I don't think I'll buy any others, most info you can glean off the net for something specific.
I loved labour of Love by Gabrielle Targett also! I have just bought her hypnobirthing CD too because I was so impressed with her book. I also really like New Active Birth (J Balaskas) and What to Expect was/is my general guide. Also, the Incarnating Child is a lovely book too. Mind you, I never knew there was a recommended reading list on BB either, but I just liked the books that I mentioned.
Happy Reading
There is an awesome book called Great Expectations - it's a recently published one - I think 2006? It has EVERYTHING and I loved the way it was laid out - it had a little section on how the baby is developing each week and how you're feeling and had lots of in depth info about different tests and procedures as well as labour and birth and complications. Plus a fabulous, comprehenxive index so you can find info quickly. Highly highly recommended! The only downside is that it is American so baby measurements are imperial not metric.
Personally, I HATED Up The Duff it was just so... I'm almost tempted to say condescending but that isn't quite the right word. It assumes you know nothing and makes everything a joke and big complaint session. But lots of people love it because it is funny.
I also didn't like What to Expect when You're Expecting - I didn't like the layout with the question and answer style - it was difficult to find information quickly and wasn't to the point enough for me.
I guess I am strange since most people love both of those books.
I also have Miriam Stoppard's Conception Pregnancy and Birth which I really like. Some of the photos are really old fashioned but the info is good. There are some recent editions - 2005/2006 I think and you can usually pick it up at a 2nd hand shop or garage sale or ebay for a couple of bucks.
Sheesh, I wrote a novel. Sorry!!
