    Can't Stop Vomiting

Posting at 2 am... The joys of jetlag.

When I was in London I started vomiting and basically didn't stop. After four days I had to be hospitalized for dehydration. They gave me some anti-nausea drugs via drip and since then all was fine.

However since we got home (Sat night) I've started again. Once on Sat night then a few times on Sunday. Basically all I did yesterday was vomit and sleep. I try to keep drinking water and so far have managed to keep dinner down.

    There's a few things I'm worried about.

    1. I can't live like this! I have to work, run my life, help at home etc. I just can't keep this up for another 6 weeks, assuming it does stop at 12 weeks.

    2. Is there any medication I can be given?

    3. I'm struggling to keep my folate down. Any suggestions?

On the upside my husband now doesn't blink when I chuck. He had a very weak stomach and was a bit pathetic about vomiting generally. Me vomiting would normally make him gag. Now he's a total pro.

Any other experiences with this would be great.

Oh you poor thing . Go straight to your GP today, there are some medications that you can safely take, but you will need a prescription. Some people do get extreme m/s which is called hyperemesis gravidarum and do need to be hospitalised at times during pregnancy. I have heard that a drug called Zofran (I think that's how you spell it?) can work really well, but it is expensive and I'm sure only prescribed when absolutely necessary.

I hope it all calms down for you soon .

    Hi Fiona -

I understand your situation completely as I've just lived through it and am coming out the other side now. Although it seems unbearable, I just kept trying to listen to the others here on BB and take my 24-hr m/s as a sign that my baby was thriving whenever I had my head was hanging over the toilet bowl (if I was lucky to make it that far) yet again.

My Dr gave me a prescription for Maxalon which worked quite well although I tried to battle through as much as possible without it although in hindsight this may have been a silly idea. I got mine filled at the Chemist Warehouse on Puckle as I found that is definitely the least expensive place in the area for prescriptions and from memory it wasn't pricey at all - maybe $15-$20 a pack.

Also, I've been living off of those Hydralyte frozen things which I also bought from there. My Dr advised that these were a good way to replace all of the electrolytes I was losing plus they help to keep your fluids up as you'd be surprised at how much you're actually dehydrated when you're constantly vomiting regardless of how much water you try to ingest. Those are actually bearable to keep down and I think they were around $10 for a pack as well. For what it's worth I bought two packs of different flavours and have yet to finish one despite living on them for quite a few days so for me they were well worth every penny spent. They also have the option of a powdered version but those made me spew instantly although they may work for you.

HTH a bit and I send you all my good wishes for a H&H pregnancy!!

Vomiting that much at 6wks sounds like the start of all my pg's - I have Hyperemesis Gravidarum. It can (and does for me) last all 9 months.

Go see a dr - they can prescribe anti-nausea drugs, like Maxolon, that should help.

You sound just like my sister. SHe is 13 weeks and still vomiting! She was hospitalised a couple of weeks ago as well. It must be terrible for you. She was given 2 different anti nausea drugs, Maxalon was one and I can't remember hte name of the other. She was also given suppositorys in case she throws up the tablets. Definitely see your dr, they can help.

Hope this doesn't last the whole 9 mths.

Hi. I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum when I was pregnant with my girls. Lost heaps of weight & was vomotting around 17 - 18 times a day for 4 - 5 months.
I was admitted to hospital a few times & was given Maxalon, but I had a bad reaction to it, so couldn't keep taking it.
I've heard of Zofran, I think its used for anti nausea in Cancer patients (if I remember right) but my gp didn't feel comfortable trying it as it wasn't known then if it was safe in pregnancy. Things may've changed by now though.
Go see your gp. I really hope it doesn't last too long for you.

^My sister was given a drug used for nausea associated with Chemotherapy (could have been Zofran but can't remember) when she was in hospital. THey told her it was ok ot use during pregnancy but because it was very expensive they could only give her the 1 dose.

hi fionaw, I used the zofran during my pregnancy last year, they gave me the initial dose in hospital after being put on a drip for rehydration.
I was told its safe to use and yep its the one they give to cancer patients.
It was fantastic, I could not have functoned without it and I had ms up until about 22-24 wks I feel your pain!
it is very expensive, but if you can get a script for the higher dose in a larger pack ( I think its the 10mg in a box of 8, ) I used this and just took half a tablet (well wafer, they dissolve on your tongue!) when I really needed it.
I think you will pay anywhere between 40-$75.
i hope you will be feeling better soon.
oh yeah, and I second the hydralyte, fantastic stuff!

I'm still vomiting at least once a day at 14 weeks - Maxolon did nothing for me and Zofran worked for an hour or two after taking it... I also had the generic which only cost me $5 for 4 10mg tabs.
I manage to keep down the little folic acid tablets but couldn't take the multi so I used to have the kids chewable vitamins - they went down better. They've got some folate in them - might be better than nothing...
Hang in there... this is worth it in the end (it's what I cling to)

    Oh fiona I can sympathise.
    I tried maxalon... nothing.
    Zofran via tabs - nothing.
Zofran through a drip - nothing.
I'm still a little sick now at 36+weeks. I was similar last pregnancy.
At last After 28 weeks I was able to keep a meal down per day.

I hope that it stops for you soon. It's a horrible thing to go through.
