    date of conception querie

    Hi,

I am not sure where to post this as I'm not pregnant yet. I ovulate around day 22/23 and have been told I will have pretty much no chance of the egg being fertilised as it is too old.

    Having said this:
    1. our first and only child was conceived around day 22 and she is happy and healthy
    2. we have been trying for 20mths with no luck for #2. (I've got endo though so I don't think it may be entirely about the date of ov)

I just wondered for those of you who are pregnant what day you ovulated (if you know).

    thanks,

Hi Michelle. I have a 34-36 day cycle and ovulate 14 days before that. This time when I concieved I O'd on day 21 and got a positive test at 12 days past O. I can't see how your eggs would be too old as they only live for about 12-ish hrs regardless of what cycle day you O on. You would still be likely to have an O date roughly 14 days before the start of your period - have you charted your cycle to see if there is a pattern with it at all?

    Hi Michelle,

Just curious who told you about the "old" egg theory? Was it a dr?

I believe that there is a theory that ovulating later in a cycle can result in the developing follicles being over-exposed to hormones and therefore making them less viable. I think this theory has been around for a while. I have certainly read articles written by Drs a while ago stating this theory.

I asked my FS about this as I quite often has longer cycles and she said that there was no evidence that women with longer cycles of 35-36 days had a higher risk of miscarriage so there was thought to be no evidence for the theory of "poorer" egg quality.

DS was concieved on about day 46 and he turned out ok!! I can have really long cycles.

I know that some alternative practitioners believe in the "old" egg theory and believe that there is a higher risk of miscarriage and "abnormal" eggs in women ovulate later than day 19, especially those who follow Francesca Naish's Natural Fertility Management theories.

I tend to trust what my FS told me. My own mother had longer cycles, never had an issue with infertility or miscarriage and we kids turned out ok!!!

My cycle at the moment is longer like yours. I want to see if I can use acupucture or alternative theories to shorten the follicular phase just to give us a chance a bit more often!!!!!

    Good luck with the TTC.
    TICKLISH.

Hi - I dont know a lot about this but I have 6 week long cycles.. it took us 12 months to conceive but I was never told that the longer cycles would be an issue (I only spoke to GP though no FS or anything)...

    Hi,

Thanks for your replies, I think I just needed some positive vibes that yes you can get pregnant even on longer cycles. We have been trying for so long this time...my acupuncturist who is trying to shorten my cycles ascribes to the poor egg quality theory. my natropath (who actually works with Francesca Naish) is fine with my longer cycle because of my previous conception on a longer cycle resulting in a perfect pregnancy and baby.

Yes, I have charted my cycles in the past - mucus, temps, the works hence I am positive my usual ovulation is around 22/23. I don't chart anymore though because I feel confident I understand my bodies rhythms. Interestingly, when I had a laparoscopy for endo last Sept 06, my cycles changed and I started ovulating around day 17/18 for 4 cycles. Now that makes me wonder if I didn't have endo if I would naturally ovulate earlier - hence why I am trying the acupuncture.

Long reply, sorry. thanks for taking the time to listen to me, and send me your thoughts.

Maybe it could have somehow affected your cycles - not sure. Have you been DTD on those earlier dates at all?

    Hi Michelle,
I have long cycles - between 5 and 7 weeks. I fell pg this month (on our first month of trying) and I've estimated that I O'd anywhere between day 20 and 26, due to the fact that it has showed up on a HPT this quickly. Sorry I don't have accurate days for you, as I was just gunning it really. With my first child my cycles were 5-6 weeks long, and that resulted in a normal healthy pg too.
Goodluck with everything, I hope you get your BFP really soon!

    Hi Michelle,

I'm sorry this is taking a long time for you! The endo is likely to have something to do with it (not just having a long cycle).

I too ovulate around the 20 day mark. We were DTD from days 17-19 and were successful.

    HI Sherie,

Yes we did try when my cycles were shorter, this time frame fell when we moved from Roma (western QLD) to Newcastle. Big move, very stressful. Bad luck I guess.

I'm glad to hear that others have long cycles and successful pregnancies/birth. I feel better now about having success with #2.
