    fitness and putting on weight.

    I am 5 weeks pregnant, and I am really excited. I have only had a couple of days where I have felt a bit off, no real morning sickness yet, so it does not seem real.

    In the last 4 months I have lost 10kgs, which I believe assisted in us falling pg naturally (I have PCOS so and last time had to take meds)

    I am really worried about packing on the weight. Last time I had insulin dependant GD and I don't want to go down that road if I can help it.

    Is there a safe way to continue to lose weight without affecting my baby?
    I am currently eating 1400 calories a day and doing 30 minutes on the eliptical cross trainer or Wii fit every morning.

    Can I continue to do this without risking bub's health.


    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Leanne,

    Continuing with excersize you have previously been doing is no problems and very healthy for your pregnancy as long as you are not doing any high risk acitivies or weigh baring excersize. As for the caleries.... Hmmm I really thing you should be consulting your GP about that one, you have to be a bit careful with that sort of thing during pregnancy.

    Not knowing your height or weight - I can tell you that 1400 calories is a bit too low...I think maybe you should see your GP about that.

    But keep exercising - if it feels good, do it hun!

    thanks girls ...... i will just see how i go with eating well and exercising and then talk to my ob about it when i see her at 13 weeks. they say that you should not really put on any weight in the first trimester,so I will do what I can (without being silly) to do that....

    I agree with the others 1400 is probably too low. The average woman needs around 2300 cal a day. A preg one needs an extra 300. Preg is no time to loose weight.

    I have also just lost around 10kg in the last couple of months and dont want to blow out and I still exercise but really moderately. The main thing to be concerned about is how hot you are getting. If you over heat you can damage the baby as its cells wont cope with being too hot. Too hot for me means sweating at the gym. So I might go on the bike next to the fan and keep my heart rate around 145 beats rather than up to my usual 185. Also remember that even early in preg we get that hormone relaxin in our blood with relaxes our joints and so we are far more flexible - that can mean that we are able to strain our joints without meaning too.

    I am limiting myself to gently bike or cross trainer work and light yoga. Its frustrating as I love going to the gym and really working hard but I can do all that again once bubs is here.

    Definitely talk to your doc, or a nutritionist. I started this pg 'overweight' and in my particular case, it is alright for me to try and 'maintain' my current weight for the first two trimesters and gain only a little in the last trimester. But not to loose it. I am eating the equivilent kj that a breastfeeding woman would need - Although I am not actually counting my kj, more just following a health eating plan and keeping full on fruit an vege. (although I will admit to downing quite a few paddlepops in the last few days ).

    hi there, 1400 cals does seem too low, but maintaining your normal exercise routine (without overheating or pushing your heart rate too high) should be OK

    Just on that subject, to pregnant women need extra calories even in the first trimester? i thought it was just after that once the placenta is fully working and the baby is bigger?
