    Question Gelato

I know you can't have soft serve ice cream because of risk of salmonella/listeria, but what about gelato from a reputable gelateria????

I've never heard that you can't eat it. I hope that's right as I love it, especially on really hot days!! Oh now I want some......!

I'm pretty sure it should be fine, especially from a reputable gelateria with a high turnover - or you could buy an icecream maker and make it yourself!

    I was wondering about this...
I know that some recipies for home made ice-cream need eggs, but they don't get cooked do they? just frozen?
Would this be the same for gelato?
I've avoided it because of the egg thing but I'd love to have some!!!! Someone tell me I'm wrong LOL!

Freezing kills listeria just like cooking does. I have checked with my Ob and Gelato is fine. Enjoy!

From what I've read, freezing doesn't kill off the listeria, it puts it into hibernation so to speak & then when the food hits room temperature it starts to grow again. Most gelaterias are phasing out egg so you should be ok, just ask them when you order which ones don't contain egg.

Sorbet is fine too as it doesn't contain any dairy products.

hmmm... that's what I thought Sarah. Asking them which ones don't have egg is a great idea.

I've been eating sorbet too mmmmm... *drool*
and making my own fruit slushies and milk/milo frozen things too.

I used to drive my friends bonkers when we went out to eat when I was pregnant with Zander! I'd ask what sort of ice cream went into milk shakes & always request freshly cooked things. Drove them all nuts, but I needed to do it for me.

Just thought I'd add my two cents. When ice creams and gelati are made with eggs, you normally make a custard out of them before freezing - this does mean the eggs are cooked. Not sure whether they are cooked enough to kill bacteria etc., but I guess what I'm saying is that if it's safe to eat custard then it should be safe to eat ice cream (even if made with eggs).

Great point Star! I know everytime I've made ice cream it is made with a custard base, therefore the egg is cooked. I figure as long as it's not soft serve, it should be okay to eat. And I'm pretty paranoid about what I eat ATM! (I drive my friends crazy too Sarah!)
