Question When can you get your first ultrasound?

    Hey!

So I am 5.5 weeks pregnant so very early on and I am just wondering when you can get your first scan?

I spoke to the Antenatal clinic and they said that I get my first scan at 18 weeks... I cannot wait that long !!!! I know they have the scan to check for down syndrome around 11-12 weeks but even that is pretty far away to me!!!!

I believe the blood tests and the 3 HPT that I took when they say positive but it's just hard for me to believe until I actually see our little baby.

Am I being too keen or do other people feel like they have to see it to believe it??

If unsure of dates they will do an early scan, or if you have any bleeding.

My OB did scans in his rooms at all appts from 8 weeks.

    Congratulations and good luck!

I had my first at 5.5 weeks. Only because i had really bad cramping and they had to rule out an ectopic pregnancy but im pretty sure the next is the 12 week scan for the NT scan to rule out downs syndrome and other abnormalities.

I too couldnt go until 18 weeks without having an ultrasound.

You should talk to them about having one in the next couple of weeks, even just to see the babys forming the way it should be.

They will do a dating scan if you are unsure of your dates. Other than that, you have to wait until the NT scan, or the 18 week scan.....sorry....

it can be practice that the antenatal clinic will only do the admin of the 18 week scan. To get a dating scan or the 12 week NT scan is still 'optional' and many ppl find they organise it through their GP (this is more often the case if you are going public...i remember when i went private with DD1 it was organised through my OB, but this time i had to do it all through GP itms).

I had a dating scan at 6 weeks because my GP wasn't sure of my dates because my cycles had been irregular, even though I explained to him about charting and temping etc and therefore I knew the exact date when I had o'd. Go and see your GP and they will prob send you for a dating scan. It made a huge difference to how I felt about my pregnancy to be honest.

Re: When can you get your first ultrasound?

I've had early scans each time, I'm having an 8 week scan.
Go to your GP and ask for a refferal for a dating scan @ 8 weeks if you like
After my past history no way I could wait 12 weeks.
Good luck and I hope you have a healthy happy 9 months

I'm 8 weeks now and had an early dating scan at 6 wks. Even though I knew my dates but my GP organised for me to have one which was good coz I liked seeing little bubba on the screen, makes it feel more real. Also had some bleeding few days again so had another scan at 8 weeks. Next one probably will be 12 weeks. Can't wait! I don't think I can wait till 18 weeks to have the first scan!

    Early Scans

I am currently 7 weeks pregnant and my doc has told me I can book my first scan anywhere from 8 weeks on. Personally try to hold out as long a possible as you will get to see more the later you go. I know it is hard but it will also make it easier as the time frame between scans will not be too far apart if you can hold off. I am going to do my best to hold off till at least 9 to 10 weeks - will see how I go. (on another note - try not to push too much with your pregancy as it will just make it take longer to get to that 40th week mark - stay strong, you will get there soon). Good luck with it all and I hope you see your beautiful bub soon.

I had a dating/headcount/heartbeat check U/S in the doc's office with both this pregnancy and the last the first time I turned up pregnant, which was around 8 weeks both times. It was just a very quick thing.

Hy all thanks for the replies!

I had my first ultrasound on friday last week at 11 weeks. We got an awesome photo of bubs face which was awesome!! My Dr sent me for one just so I could see the baby, he's pretty good!!

Did anyone bleed after their first ultrasound? I had a little bit of spotting about 4-5hrs after the U/S. I've been to the dr since and he's going to send me for another one if I am still spotting by thursday...
    Just curious...
